Bruce Penhall came home for a three-montli
vacation from the European speedway scene,
but after only one week on U. S. soil, he was
back in action at J. C. Agajaninan's Ascot
Park for the National Long
Track Speedway Championship.
In the first of two events on the

the 52-nder field and took,1600 POints
toward the £lnal round at Ascot on
Nov . 5.
Bruce was th e 1977 points leader on
'the big oval and the odds -on favorite
to win , but Ifi -year -old Shawn Moran
was the guy to beat because of his
outstanding record this season on the
quarter·m ile track . As it worked out
after 21 events, it would -be Jack Kee ,
Ron Preston , Shawn Moran and Bruce
Penhall in the final event.
Preston's bike suffered a flat tire as
they were lining up for the start. He

straightaway , Moran took ove r.
Penhall got the lead back as they went
into turn three and again Moran took
over as they came onto the fron;
straight. The race went like that for
three laps , with the lead changing
, several times every lap, But fourth and
final trip around was all Bruce
Penhall's, and he took the checkered
flag for his first victory of the year...in
the USA .
