Puta motorcyclist in the State Assembly By Russ Sanford How many times' have you said , "IfI was a legislator.ithings would sure be a lot different? Well, one of your fellow motorcyclists got fed up with th e system 'a nd decided to do something about it " . . and he needsour help. J. Robert "Bob" Hayes is a member of M.O .R.E. , a member of AMA District , 37, and an Expert desert racer. What is perhaps even more im porta nt is that he is running for State Assemblyman fro m the 39th ' District which centers around the San FernandoValley. Two yea rs ago , Bob made his first try and narrowly missed the opportunity to be the Republican candidate against the Democratic incumbent. This past spring, Bob mounted his campaign anew and beat his opponent by a wide margin. This merely allows Bob to run against the same Democratic incumbent on Nov . 7. It is not going to be an easy race , but Bob can win with our help . . . . and bel ieve me , it is im pera tive that we helpl Bob set up Oct. 7th as the 'Bob Hayes Day '. asking for off-readers to walk his District for two hours handing out campaign litera ture, He planned a big party for the afternoon, buying $1,000 worth of beer and other goodies. ' , Earl Rober and I drove down to Los Angeles from Sacramento to participate. We arrived at the appointed time of 9:00 a .m. and set off with campaign literature in hand. .When we ,retu rn ed to headquarters three hours la ter , guess what? A total of six people (including ourselves) had shown up. There were two motorcyclists and four dune-buggy types . This was in spite of the fac t that Bob had sent notices (far in advance) to all known motorcycle clubs and Cycle News had even carried an article on the project. I couldn't bel ieve it! Out of the hundreds of thousands of motorcyclists in the Los Angeles area , on ly two showed up to help Bob . And , one of them was from Sacramento and the other was Bob 's brother! I prevailed upon Bob todo it again on Nov . 4 . I promised him a big turnout, even if I had to shame people into coming. So, that's what I am doing. It will only take two hours of ' you r time to put a motorcyclist into the State Capitol, and it is fun . If you can't devote two hours of you r time, ' , tlien you don't deserve anything but bad laws and land closures! .. We meet at 17023 Chatsworth Blvd . (nea r the intersection with Balboa) at 9 'a .m. on Saturday, No v. 4 . There is ample parking in ' the lot across the street. Wear comfortable walk ing shoes. You will be handed literature, given a map of the assigned precinct , an d two of you will start out to leave a piece of campaign literature at each door. It is simple, but it must be done . I want you to think about something . . .. if the motorcyclists can put one of their people into office in this District , think of the impact it will ha ve upon every legislator .. . . sta te or federal. They will be immensely aware diat we can do the same thing in their I, District, tool This could well be the tu rning po int at ' bea ting th e Sierra Club at their own gamel How much is m~torcycling wort h to you? • ~ 00 s-.
