He was "out" for a b it and wish es he coul d rem ember what he d id wrong so he won' t do it agai n. (Pa t old buddy. you r fron t end wiped in a hol e , you stood up on the bars and flew like a bird. that 's what happened . . . it always does when we lose th e front end!) . Ja y Ba les ended up the Open A:nateur winn er , a lt h o u g h Joel Windham was the leader first round. Mike Paulson and Allen Sweet each gOI out front at different times in the nelt two , but Bales just went after them and took over, while Windham unloaded on that tricky downhill tricky only because you can find yourself going a bit quicker than you intended to , a mistake Experts don't rruke too often. The sidehacks came out too, seven of them , including some of the Desert Donkeys who gained fame boating on the lake at th e Dirt Diggers GP. The Butterfield/Zemke Honda did it three stnight, but in the second round the gaag really got to kick ing up the dirt, especiall y the teams of Moore/ Acevedo and Davis Sr .lDavis Jr.. with Elliot / . Sberm an doing a little place swapping with them . On the last lap th e Honda gill away from Moore and they d id one of those spectacular hack-upending things. Alt hough they got knocked a bout a bit they were back ou t in the third round . The 250cc amateur/Experts had a nice , wild and wooly class. In the first round. Ch ris Ca nnon , Tommy Walton and Joe Steffen went through tu rns on e and two handlebar 10 handlebar off th e sta rt. Cannon stayed out front bu t. Steffen was even going sideways t ryjng to keep Wayne Rainey behind him . ; Steffen had troubles next round while Larry Bird tre~ ted spectators to s~me wild sliding trying to keep up with th e front runners for a bit and Rainey popped a wheelie taking the flag as the win ner . T om my Walton fel l off and Mark Ca in eme rge d second. Aga in in th e las t round Cannon gav e Ra in ey a re al ra ce ; it's always neat 10 have one of th e top Pr o riders to ride against, It inspires you to go fast, it doesl Again the fin ish was th e sa me , Wayne . Cannon and Ca in ; th is rnoto Bird was th ird and Jay Lew is fou rth. In the 125cc Amateur/Expert go Da rren Hulbert blasted b y Bud Carroll into th e lead and ra n away with the first moto, with Steve Ka rsten starti ng to pu t the pressure on Carroll's second place. Next moto they all went faster , Carroll got the jump bi t again Hulbert gave him what for (he was to unload in the last round) and Dan Milam got up there int o third. . Carroll really got with it in the last moto, with Karsten behind him and Ho lbert righ t with 'em, so close to Karsten he nearly hit his rear wheel on . one occasion. Karsten really had it all out and he and Carroll came across the finish lin e just about side by side with Bud getting it by a spoke. Chris Chandler put the 125cc Novice class away ea ch moto with J immy Snow and Steve Sm ith settling out second and third behind him . For the Minis . overall it was Curtis Cannon three straight, and although Roger Thompson used as little of the track as possible , he just couldn't better his pos ition. Again , watch the Cycle N ews Calendar section for news of point runs , there are some changes coming up so don't miss out by going only by you r District cal endar . .. and if the news hasn't reached you yet, Elsin ore is now (sob) closed.
