ZIp OPft", /n9 By Keith Clemons T RABUCO CANYON. CA. OCT. I Moto Meister's Tom Mayfield jetted do wn to Racing World set on winning the Open Pro race and did . O pen Pro Ron Tebbs had been getting up at 5:30 a.m . every morning to jog before sch ool . hoping to get ba ck into top conditio n before meeting up with someo n e like Mayfield. Tebbs' Dad used to be the assistant track coach for USC and has been helping Ron improve his sprints and, more importantly, is m aking sure he doesn't let up. Tebbs is truly in training. When the gate dropped in the first moto of the O pe n Pros it was plain th at the race was between Mayfield and Tebbs. After Tebbs squeezed his way through the hole he and Mayfield let go with suc h m oto madness tha t by the end of the fourth lap they were dicing together with a 4Q·second lead over the rest of the pack. Ma yfield passed Teb bs and secu red the fro nt. so Teb bs ba cked off knowi ng t he upcom ing secon d moto was the hot one. That n umber two mo to saw Mayfield grab the holeshot with Tebbs truckin' his hot hustling Husky close behind putting the press ure on hard. It was anybody's race until Tebbs got nailed with a fla t and that was that. Tebbs. who had worked so hard to get in shape . was defeated b y the elements. Mayfield finished a cool m inute in front of second place Jim Ervin. Ervin still went home second over all because Tebbs didn't finish . Jim Tarantino got a last place start in th e first 250cc Pro moto. He popped a wheelie' off the line which cost him valuable seconds as he cut his throttle to set his Suzuki down . But with a tuned-in attitude of " I'm going for it ." he blasted through the traffic all the way to the front. It wasn 't until he got far enough ahead to begin passing lapped traffic that he got into trou ble and then on ly for a moment as his front wheel washed out. causing him to spill , but Tarantino was back on his wheels before any competitive traffic could get by. Tarantino took t he second 250cc Pro moto with a fla t ou t holeshot·to· th e·checkers win to ta ke home the first place mo ney for the d ay. Tara ntino is presently looking for a , top notch · sponsor. Bre t Meyer was second through the flags in both motosfor the overall in that position and Mike Boyd drove home third . Bret Meyer also raced and won in the 125cc Pro class . In the first m oto TEAM COLOA COMB INATIONS' AVAILABLE e ~ f!!2!!!. Su:ul..
