I It was a rugged 70 mile loop in El Cajon M.C .'s scorching AMA D -3S desert race. Claude Maynard. on his Husky 390, performed near flawlessl y to grab the - overall win . A sharp eye and steady p ace kept him on a course that left some of the top riders mumbling "which way did they go?" Under the first railroad tressle 15 miles out. you ng Novice rider Paul Ahrens led the pack. In his dust cloud were Randy Hollenbeck , Jim Valov and Maynard. By the first check Hollenbeck had built a five-minute lead, still dogged by Valov , Ahrens and Maynard. Stretching it toward the second gas pit was Hollenbeck. Myers moved up . holding firm as Maynard and Valov diced it out. As Maynard moved past Valov down the wash . Valov was looking at his rear tire and dropped out due to a flat a few miles la ter. /Ii H ollenbeck had a l G-rninute Olsliion at 'the gas stop. Maynard got 6y Meyers , pulling In one m inute ahead of him. Meyers' pit crew got hiin out.a minute ahead of Maynard. At, Corrizo Wash, Hollenbeck and Meyers cut to the right and Maynard to the left. Lady Luck smiled on Maynard as he hit the pole line road to the last check before Hollenbeck and Meyers could catch him . "' Int o the check with a commanding lead, he gassed it for the home stretch. T Wice he almost got off. Seven years of racing and Maynard was headed for Iili first overall win . At the finish he said it was hardest just to slow it down S() 'nea r the checkered flag. Four minutes later Hollenbeck pulled in with Meyers on his flank . Kirk Kontiles slid in for fourth: fifth vent to the honking Novice rider Paul Ahrens - his first appearance in the lOp 10. Sixth and se venth were veteran Seniors Cecil Hollenbeck and Earl Nichols. Charles Ben net! was top 1 25cc Expert; Peter Pasquariella and Gene Sickle rounded out the top 10.
