Kelly wins another CRChare scrambles By Jerry G. Welton CALIFORNIA CITY, OCT. 8 Despite early breakage and disaappointment the day before in SCORE's Parker 400, Tom Kelly came back to Cal City the next day and won the California Racing Club's hare scrambles, Tom's dad drove all night to get to the race with Doyle Payne making all the necessary repairs the morning of the race. Tom was on the line and ready when the banner dropped at 9:15 a.m . At the bomb it was Amateur Richard Zajic (250 Suz) out front. As the course hung a sharp left just past the bomb, Mark Force (400 Yam) took command of the lead as Zajic and Kelly were too far to the right. Doug Biesner (250 Valerian Suz) had a hot line and was running founh ahead of Scot Duncan (250 Yam) and Darren Pritchett (175 Yam). 18 Kelly got past Zajic when the course came across pit row .and overtook Force on the first road. Then in the first canyon, Zajic hit a rain rut and crashed, giving Kelly a safe lead. Scot Duncan got by Beisner but unloaded a short time later. Chris Duncan (400 Suz) and Beisner stopped to help . Scot Duncan sat and gathered his composure while the others went on . Beisner got a flat a shan time later and couldn't keep up the pace. This moved Pritchett into a firm fourth. Jeff Matthews (400 IT) was moving up fast on his father's bike as he got by veteran Al Wurtzel (400 KTM). Still running his Dunestown numbers, Troy Hollis (570 Suz) came from about mid pack to break into the top ten . Mike Mulconery (400 Mid-Valley KTM) was running up front and threatening front runners but his front tire went flat and he too dropped off. While leading Kelly got lost . He found the course only to get lost again , this time losing the lead to Zajic . Kelly caught Zajic a shan time later and held the lead for the remainder of the race. Kelly came through the pits about a m inute ahead of Zajic with Pritchett not far behind. Matthews was able to see the dust of the front runners when he came by with a bit of space between himself and Force. Hollis was next with Wurtzel ready to strike from behind. Jeff Cannon (250 Hus), Steve Brookshire (250 Yam), and Jack Fuller (250 Yam) rounded out the top 10. Jay Glover (250 Hus) was unaware he was running first novice overall until reaching the pits at the end of loop one. Kelly set sail for his second and final lap and stretched his lead over Zajic, who had contracted the flu the day before and was beginning to tire . About halfway around the second loop, Pritchett made a daring uphill pass , taking over the second spot. Hollis and Force dropped out on the second lap moving Wurtzel to fifth . Matthews got by the ailing Zajic and rode comfonably at third. With his usual consistency, Kelly wheeled his KTM across the finish with no other riders in sight. A few minutes later it was the lightweight machine of Pritchett. Darren hadn't ridden in the desert in quite awhile and was a bit tired at the fin ish . Matthew did an outstanding job of wheeling his way to third ahead of Torque Master's Zajic. Defending Junior/Senior champ Al Wurtzel brought the class Fints lead in doing so. Cannon held hIS lead over Fuller at the end of it all with Tony Stuart (Suz) riding consistently and finishing second smallbore. Chris Duncan rode the last lap and a half with a flat front tire but his rimlocks held and he finished ninth overall despite a couple of get offs. Scott Atchison, third lightweight, rounded out the top 10 just ahead of Ed Mundy (250 Suz) and Jerry Utterback (400 Yam). Donnie Morrison > (Yam) dominated the Amateur Lightweight class most of the day as he took the win over Scot Ellico (175 Yam). Larry Upp (250 Yam) once again took first overall Senior with M.S. Dyott (400 Yam) in for second. Finishing behind Morrison in the 14th spot was first Novice Jay Glover. Brian Zier had taken the early novice lead with Peter Talmasoff (400 Yam) and Bobby Schoeder (250 Suz) getting a jump on Billy Joe Lee (250 Hus) and Doyle Sewell (175 IT). At the finish Glover was on top with Paul VanderByl (250 Hus) and Jeff Moorke (175 KTM) running top three. Sewell used his good stan well, hanging in there for founh over S. Hodgson (175 Yam). '( Dan Smith (400 Yam) was the: overall winner in the Beginner claS$ over E. Evans (250 Yam). Rick Ferrick (Suz) put his L bike in for third aheaa of R . Hall (125 Suz) and D. Marshall (125 Yam) . In the Women's Division Patrie Payne (175 KTM) was ruled the winner after she and Marge Reeser, (175 Yam) crossed the finish line side by side. N Byron Van (Yam) took the Mmi class victory over the hard charging Mark Heth (Yam). Barry Crawford (Yam) ran close but could not strike as he finished third. • Results OPEN EX: 1.
