Collins tops NHRA World Finals By Jump Hopson ONTARIO, CA . OCT. 6-8 The incredible Russ Collins, aboard his 600 hp V-8 Honda , beat motorcycle drag racing's National Hot Rod Associationsanctioned W inston World Finals ·at Ontario Mot or . Speedway. The five bike field fea tu red the finest examples of . current mo torcycle d rag racing technology. Fast qualifier was Collins on the R.C. Engineering prepared "Socerer," a twin -engined , supercharged Honda. setting the quickest and fastest (per the NHRA) elapsed time and speed ever recorded on a motorcycle: 7.62 seconds, 199 :55 miles per hOUL Collins has been seeking 200 mph and htat is about as close as one can come. Second qualifier was Ken Annesley , rid ing the Norris cammed Motorcycle Un lim ited double · Kawasaki with a: 7.67 sec., 183.67 mph . Annesley has been running super hard in th e East and he was showing he can go fast ou t west too . . . The balance of the field included Ron Fringer, aboard Joe Smith's . double Harley; Marion Owens, ridi ng his own Harley double ; and Jim Barnard riding the Teason & Barnard Magnacharger equipped blown (supercharged) Honda. The crowd loved the motorcycle addition to the usual all auto event and the NHRA seems to be listen ing as they are consid ering adding pro stock and top fuel motorcycles classes to a few of their National events next year. • oa- - First round 26 Collins rec eived the bye and planned to make it a 200 mph effort. About midway through the quarter . t he back tire started bouncing (traction proved a problem for Collins throughout the event) and he had to roll completely off the throttle and then ease back on and still went over 197 mphl Fringer put Owens on the trailer with a .2 second advantage. Annesley edged out Barnard in one of the best races of the day turning a 7.76 ,184.12 to Barnard's losing 7.89 . 177.86. Second round This time Annesley drew the bye and showed he still meant business , turning an 8.12 . 185.19 . The Motorcycle Unlimited 'c rew really had their Kawasakis clickin' and were the most consistent runners at the event. Collins managed to nip Fringer with a tremendous top end charge netting a time of 7.79 , 196.93, compared to 7.87 , 178.21. Final The stage was set . Collins lined up in the left lane where a busted motor had oiled his pa th's midsection in the prior race. Collins remarked later he thought the oil would create more traction problems, but nevertheless, he staged with Annesley. Soon after the green Collins fears materialized and he went up in smoke some 100 yards from the start. All he could do was dial it on and hope his power could make it up on the top end. The win light came on in Annesley's lane, 7.93, 184.04 1to Collin's late charging 8.24 , 191.08, but Annesley pulled a red light, possibl y drawn out early to get the jump on the incredible power of the "Socerer," and Collins was the victor! . Collins stated at th e NHRA awards banquet he planned to retire as he knew he was going over 200 mph at the end of his 199 run and that was good enough, but afterwards he said he had some surprises in store for neityear. Didn't Ali say something like that? Next year we will know . a .89. 177.86I. SECO ND ROUND: 1. Ken Annesley 18 .12. 185.191 Bye Russ Collin. a.79. 196.93)over Ron Fringer a.87. ; 17B .211. Burtt and WIllIams commandeer Corona By Ron Lawson CORONA, CA, OCT. 6,1978 Redlands Suzuki's Danny Burtt, who is coming on strong in the 125cc Pro class at Corona Raceway, made it five in a row with a convincing rwomoto win over Robert Green (Suz) and Andy Orescanin (Suz) . When they roared off the line for moto one, it was Burtt in front never to be contested. Eddie Wearden (Suz) got a middle of the pack start. but by the half-way .point. he was in a solid second place. Orescanin spent most of the race dicing back and forth with Rob Miller (Suz) but when the checkered flag came out, it was Orescanin on top . The first moto finishing order was Burtt , Wearden , Green and Orescanin. The start of the second round saw Orescanin grab the lead, but Burtt , the I4-year-old from Yucaipa , was in front before the end of the first lap. As Burtt disappeared from sight. Orescanin dropped to third behind Green. The last moto and overall positions went Burtt, Green and Orescanin, The bigg~t .Pro winner was Dave Williams (Wheelsmith/Mai), who took the Open and 250cc classes. In the first 250cc moto , he was in back of Phil Thorstensen (Hon) for a couple of laps until he found an opening and put it to use. Corona regular Joe Price (Mai) held a distant third ahead of Dane Wigington (Yam) and Andy Northrup (Suz) for most of the race. Northrup waited until the last lap to push his Suzuki around Wigington for fourth . Williams finished with a safe margin on Thorstensen who was far removed from the rest of the pack. The next race was all , Williams. He took the holeshot over Thorstensen and Burtt, who was racing a 250cc machine for the first time in several months , and started to pull away. Tlie r moto was a parade. with positions remaining unchanged all the way to :> the end. Williams took top money with Thorstensen, Northrup, Price an d 2 Burtt following. In the Open chua Williams had no problem taking both holeshou over ' Lou Fernandez (Yam) and Paul Sedler (Mai) and then disappeared. The race " for second was a little closer with Sedler on top of moto one .and ll Fernandez in front in the final round. £ Sportsman Mike McGurk (Yam) put in one of the most conaistent races for I top honors in the 125cc Novice claP (Div II) with a 3-2 score. Ron Harriso :> (Yam) took the first moto and Geo Roese (Suz) topped round two, but McGurk was consistent enough to net the overall. Second place trophy went :> to Roese and Jeff Camarigg (Yani) ' went home with third. ~ au Resuhs ~ MINI BEG DIV t 1. D8rin M.,.. (Suzl; 2. ~~ SchMlf.- (Suzl; 3. BIII_xlVoml. U MINI BEG DIV 2: 1.
