XR500. Remember those four-stroke call letters, because you're going to be hearing a lot about them and the Honda national enduro team from now on. Chapter One in the XR uccess story unfolded October 8 in the Cal State 100, a Western Regional . National Championship enduro staged in the rugged Lucerne Vcilley, one of Southern Californias more celebrated rock gardens. The course was' a diabolical bike-killer. Mile after mile of rocky uphills and whiteknuckle downhills shimmering in the desert heat And the 250-rider field was tops, including the defending national champion. When the dust settled, Team Honda riders Don Sanford and Rick Munyon had thundered home first and third overall and first in their respective classes. Sanfords modified XR500 carried him through the courses stony mazes with only six penalty points to take the overall trophy and top honors in the AA Open class. Second overall and first in 250A went to Mike Adams riding a modified Honda CR250, with Munyons modified XR500 close behind for third overall and first in A Open. Still another class win went to Jay Tullis, who piloted his Honda to first in 200A and 10th overall. The Cal State 100 serves notice that Hondas new four-stroke dirt bikes are ready to rewrite the Whos Who of big time enduro competition. They're lending a new note to the winners circle- the theme music of the Honda XR four-stroke dirt revolution.
