Alford tops Mineral Wells hill By Diane Polley MINERAL WELLS, TX, SEPT. 10 The 400-foot hill near Mineral Wells was attacked Sunday and came out the winner. A fourinch flood since the last climb _. her: filled the hill with gullies and even after the Texas Hillclimbers had ' groomed the hill with picks , shovels . and hoes , it was still as rough as a cob. Times were ' slow and crashes numerous . The big iron could not handle it as easily as the smaller bikes . Will Alford, on a 360cc Bu ltaco , set the~ top time on his first try in the 370cc class with a time of 13;90 seconds. No one else cou ld even come cl ose, and even Alford could not , though he rode the same bike in t he Exhibition class . His next fastest time wa~ )4:46 seconds in the Exhibition class. This is the kind of hill that he excells on. .Eleven -year-old Jackie Anderson on a n BOcc Yamaha was the first rider over the hill . She took 27 :36 seconds to do it. but was the only .Mini rider to go over. Jackie th en rode her brother's 100cc Yamaha in th e Powder Puff class and ca p tu red second with a ride of 18:47 seconds. Some of th e women talked her parents into letting her ride thi~ class about a year ago and now th ey are beginning to wonder if it was a mistake as Jackie just keeps getting better and faster. The next climb in Texas will be . near Decatur on the Rocky Ridge Cycle Ranch on Octo~er 1. • • " Bob Hannah's ITrans-A M A Scorecard Resu lts MINI MINI: 1.
