THE BIG BIKES AR E COMINGI
Kevin Olson (61 battles Todd Schaeffer in DeAnza's 250cc Intermediates.
Scully was right on Thorstensen's ta il
throughout the race, while Eropkin
worked to make up for a middle-ofthe-pack start. Scully was just close
enough to keep Thorstensen honest ,
but he never managed to get by.
Eropkin fin ished third ahead of Joe
Price (Mai), Bob Broten (Yam) and R.
E. ,Wall (Yam) .
T'horstensen took th e holeshot in
round two , but thi s time it wa s
Eropkin who m ade him work for his
mo ney. Scull y remained a safe
distance behind th e leaders for . the
entire
race.
Overall
it
was
Tliorstensen, Eropkin , Scully, Price,
Broten , and Bill Ca pin (Suz) .
T he 250cc In termediate ra ce was
one; of the most exciting of the day.
Brandon Baldwin, ridi ng for Redlands
Suzuki , was the man to get th e
holeshot in the first bout . He led for
less tha n two laps before Kawasakimounted J erry Treckleton got by.
Bald win then began to ha ve problems
with his Suzuki that eventually caused
him to DNF. Walt Olson (C-A) then
took over the second spot ahead of
Billy Saylors (Yam) and Mark Bottorff
(Yam). Walt's -brother Kevin Olson
(Mai) got off to a eighth place start,
but on lap six he moved past Bottorff
for fourth place. Three laps later,
Kevin passed Saylo rs and then found
himself in second place as his brother
dropped out with a flat tire. By the
end of the race, T reckleton had a good
y 1ead ahead of Olson and Saylors.
Joey McManus (Suz) jumped into
the lead of the fina l round . Walt
Olson , however, pushed his Can-Am
around McManus on the third lap.
Treckleton fell early in the race and
was hard at work making up for lost
time. Kevin Olsen was also behind the
pack ' j but by the fifth lap, he was in
seco nd place pushing his brother.
Finally Walt gave in and Kevin shot
int o the lead. By this time. T reckleton
was in fou rth place looking for a way
around McManus. In the last few laps,
Treckleton found a hidden burst of
speed that carried him past McManus
and Walt into second position where
he finished behind Kevin. The overall
results went Olson, Treckleton ,
Saylors , McManus and Bottorff.
Another top name in DeAnza's
250cc Intermediate line-up is Mike
Meshkoff. This week , however ,
Meshkoff was in the Open class on a
borrowed Ma ico . The big 440 and he
must ha ve gotten along well because
he took two stro ng first places against
first-t ime
Intermediate
Terry
Strickland (Ya m) and Whi te y
