why. Does the area show the hand of man from trails , mines , fences , buildings , stock tanks, or is it used heavily by bikers , four -wheelers, hunters , fishermen . snowmobilers, skiers, campers, rock hounders, you name it ? Does it have high wilderness va lu es? That's what they're looking for , and you can give th em . Ma ybe not in detail , but if you ride in an area that 's in the inventory , and can provid e estima tes of use , it j ust may tip the balance in our favor. To find ou t if any of the areas you ride are in the in ventory, you' ll have to re view a copy of your state's EIS . Visit you r local National Forest office. Look through the maps, and then fill out a copy of the rating sheet you 'll find elsewhere in this issue. Send that , and a letter discussing the area to your Regi on al Forester - his address is in the EIS . Do it soon - the deadline is October I , 1978 . If this sounds like a lo t of bother . remember, the wilderness supporters are doing it, and they're not going to recommend ORV use. After looking th rough the list of alternatives and the suggested disposit ion , odds are you 'll be pl easantly surprised. Nationwide , it looks like only about a sixth of the inventoried areas have been (excep t for the extreme cases ) proposed for wild ern ess designation . That's not too bad considering the heavy wilderness slant in this administration. I might an a, the eco -freaks are pissed - they want it all . Here in Arizona, the proportion is a ta d heavier - a fifth . On the Tonto Forest, near Ph oenix , none of the 16 a reas are used (or are useable) by m a ny b ikers. The Prescott is about the same; most of the areas are just too rough, and there's just no way to get a out in most of it (save for trail 239 in th e Castl e Creek area, and I , for one, will never ride that againl ). The Tucson bikers are getting it in the shorts by the local sentiment in the Rincon area - the USFS estimates 14,000 motorized visitor days in the a rea (a s opposed to 2 ,000 non motor ized ), and ye t it' s slated for wild erness. If you ride there , you 'd b;t ~ef get on the sti ck if you want to save It. S In Colorado this su m mer I had an opportunity to look through that . sta te 's EIS . All of the trails we ride in !h!{ "G old e n Triangle (Silvert one 9 u ra y-Telluride) are in " roa d less" a reas (N o . 220 & 240 ). Some of the rides were lost to the recently created Weminucke Wilderness . That's enough. If you trailbiked or jeeRed up there this summer (or wish you could), write and tell 'urn about it . gOOd "(:>j ust to help you out , here's some addresses: b~rizona Regional Forester rl Southwestern Region :> Federal Building bn517 Gold Avenue.
