Famil iar names of Kell y Butler , Allen Townsend and Chad J effery topped th e Junior Mini , Min i Band Mini A classes . Mike DeM ers cracked t he win' column in the )OOcc B cla ss, while Nick Clark rode flawlessly to take both moros in the )OOcc As. Scott VanDitto (Yam ) had ) -2 _ finishes in th e )25cc class for overall first , while Mike Schuerman (Yam) went 5-) for second and Jay Fost er (Yam) went 3-3 for a secure third. The A class was a bas h , with Bar ry Evans (Yam) making )-3 finishes hold up for fir st. Dan Little, pumping a mean green Kawasaki took sec o nd with 5- ) finishes and Shane Blood (Suz) pl ayed 'catch -up to finish third , with 6-2 rides. A familiar sight when he 's rid ing is the dynamic duo of his Dad and Grandpa dashing . from va nt age point to va ntage poi n t. It 's reall y nea t for a gu y to have his grandpa th ere to encourage h im . Grandpas say e nco u ragi ng things , like " W ha tsa ma tter , you got glu e on you r tire ?" Keeps a gu y humble . Wi th a big race g oi ng o n in Missoul a, Montana , the Pro classes wer e small . The 125 a nd 250cc Pros ran together a nd what th ey la cked in numbers th ey mad eup for in ent husiasm a nd ' fin esse . Ross Learn (Suz) outban led the rest of th e field to . beat out Kan Peterson (Su z) for first place , Ri ck Weidman (Hon ), 500 miles from home in Ta com a . Washington, put his stamp on the 250cc Pros , beating out Tracy Pri ckett (Hon) and Bob Danielson (Hon) , Frank Bue ll (Hon) wrested th e 250 cc B cl ass win from Mark Ander son (S UI) , whil e Kev in Cool ey (Suz) co nti nue d to work his magic o n th e A class , winn ing both motes. Pat Gunter (Ya m) led every lap in the firs t Open A moto and a ll bu t the last two in the seco nd , when Dave Redwine (SUI), pass ed him to go on for the win . Dale Greene ( Bu l), co nt in ued knocking on their door , and wou nd up in third place 2-3 behin d Redwin e 4 -1 a nd Gunter 1-2. The Over the Hil f Gang didn't look so far over the hill as Steve Powell pow ered a Suzuki to firs t pl ace in th e O ver 30 class , follo we d by Larr y Ferrell an d Steve Schmidt on a couple of quick Can -Ams. J effries Con stru cti on spo nso red Dave Ryan preva iled as the Expert of th e eve n ing with the o nlv blemish on his 250cc a nd 360cc Expert a nd Open win s bein g th e good assist given by Dou g Reiswig's blown lower end in th e 250 cc Main . The 250cc Expert Main was as ex citing a race as any flat tr ack fan co u ld hope for. Rya n to ok th e lead a t th e sta rt followed by Ron A rlt a nd Dave Kr a ft. Reiswig was sh uffh-d ba ck to sixth a t th e sta rt , but ca me a live on the backstretch. He pa ssed two rid ers in 00(' turn to take fourth going by till' stands. a nd passed two more go ing into the ba ckstretch to gain second . Eldon Copier leads the Bonneville Pros thr.ough a rough section. He pressed Ryan hard , but Ryan' fought him off until turns three a nd fou r of th e sixt h lap ,· when Reiswig slippe d by. Ryan got th e lead right back o n turns on e a nd two , but relinqu ished it on three a nd four as Reiswig led agai n for t he lap count . T hey pa ssed eac h othe r again, a nd o ne more fin al t ime as Reiswig , tired of th at gam e, beg a n to bui ld a co m mand in g lea d . He was look ing unbeatable , bu t his cha nces fo r a win wer e blown a long with his engi ne a t the wh ite flag. Ryan turned in an excellent ride for the win . Ron Arlt fini sh ed sec o nd with Dav e Kr aft third , a nd " Litt le Rich " Mignan o spo nsore d Perry Proieue fourth . R yan wa s third e n te ri ng th e backstret ch of the 360 cc Exp ert a nd Open Main . He passed whe elie co nt est winner John Munson entering th e stretch and took Arlt on turn three of th e second lap . He put a little too much into his passing move , howev er , and Arlt came ba ck to regai n the lead as t hey entered the stretch. Arlt led throughout the stret..h with Rya n retaking the lead for good going into turn one . Arlt s h u t off Chu ck Gondol a's bid fo r seco nd . Gondola almost passed on turn one of th e sixt h lap and finall y d id pass on turn three , o nly to lose it by goi ng high on turn two of th e nex t lap . Gondola ended ' t h ird a nd Mik e Dela ce y fourth . Gondola a nd Del acey wer e ast ride 360cc's wh ile. Rya n a nd A rlt rode 500cc's. j o hn . Mun son was Ex p e rt unbea table in th e Wheelie Contest held at hal ftime . He stood 'er u p fro m the head of th e stretc h , around th e tu rn to th e begin ni n g of th e ba ckstretch before he d ro p ped it do wn . Phil Ba cka rich look ed like a su re winner of th e 360cc Junior and Open Ma in . but fa te pull ed on e of her dirty tricks o n him . He sna tc he d th e lead a t th e g ree n flag with Sun Vall ey's Drake Evans leading th e rest of th e pa ck . Evans was re p laced by John Gu y fo r three laps hut G uy went out and Evans ca me on to be seco nd until the last turn of th e last la p . He ' took the o utside in that turn with Backari ch d own under. Ba ckarich came up beh ind a rid er he was lapping , giving Evans a ll the time he needed to shoot int o th e lead .a nd tak e th e win . Back arich was second , th e co nsistent J o hn Heern sber gen th ird and Dal e Hansen fo urt h . Bill Scott and Ri ch Dermod y wer e both im p ressive winne rs of thei r 250cc Junior heats and see med ready to provide fans with some inten se action in their fin al. They ca me off of the lin e as a pa ir . wheel -to -wheel , neither gi ving a n in ch. T hey were still together when they roared into th e backstretch , but Dermod y had a little more juice o n the st ra ight a nd shot into the lead , Scott was gaining much ground on three and fo ur when he fell , leaving Derm od y a lone at the fro n t. Scott remounted and worked his way up to seventh a t t he chec kers, With S cott o u t o f the wa y.. Dermody's m a in co m petition cam e from Donn ie Longnecker a n d 'J u m ping J on " Heiny., Heiny a nd Longnecker cha nge d pla ces a couple of times in th e ea rly going, but by th e sixth lap Longneck er had second to himself. Pat Seigl e was fourth , and Dan " Fu zzy" Du err was fifth . Everyone thought th at 40 -year-old Bru ce Douglas was the rider who was b urning up the track . in the 360 cc 'Novice and Open Main. It was his new Yammie 500 in the lead from the outset , but his son J erry, a J unior, was in the saddle. He took over when his J dad decided th at he'd had enough for the evening a nd when he got the lea d , he naturall y went for it instead of backing off. Douglas was follow ed by' Dave Mcfeely a nd J oe Costa . They sta yed th at way until turns one and two of th e ninth lap , wh en Cost a . passed McFeel y. Costa seeme d to have fou nd th e groo"e a nd had pulled even with Dou gl as by t he tim e th ey hit th e head of th e st re tc h . It was to no ava il tho ugh as Dou glas gave his Yammie the juice a nd pu lled away to win convin cingl y. Costa was the officia l winner with Rand y Yban ez second . Gordon Bu ck too k tim e off from his job ' as a cook to broil th e 250 cc Novi ces . He took th e lead from Terry Kit ch en (o h wow , a cook a nd th e kitch en ) in the st re tc h of the seco nd lap a nd never look ed back .
