De spi te h igh temperatures and ma ny track changes. Willy Simons held com mand in th e 125cc Pros. coll ecting back -to-back wins on his Yamaha . Confronted with tight turns where he used to find ju m ps. Simons bla zed away into the lead a nd left some heavy dicing for second between John Welchel . Su zuk i-mounted for U.S. Suzuki and Ch ip J ohnson (Su zcrossroads Suz ). . In th e first moto Johnson went d own on the far end of th e track a nd was forced ba ck to fifth . Bob Ramsey (Suz ) was making tracks on his Suzuki and found him self in third . fighting to keep J oe Price behind him. By rnoto's end . Sim ons sa iled across the fini sh line with a su pe rb lead foll owed by Welchel and Price . now in third . The second moto found Simons wa y out in front a nd leaving the rea l battle to Welchel and Johnson . Throughout the ra ce. Johnson was breathing down Welchel' s jersey. finally making it b y for second before t he end. The heat had reall y taken its toll as riders throughout were sp acing th emselves out and fighting to just fin ish . Simons p icked up top dolla r for the day .wit h second overall going to W elch el and th ird to Johnson. Mike Van Acker on a J D En gineer ing Honda rode on e of th e fa stest and hairiest races of th e day. snagging back-to -hack wins in the 250cc I n t e rm ed ia t es. Throughou t bot h motos his ba tt le was with Tony W alk er (Int erna tiona l M-C Yam). By the end of the first moto Van Acker was sti ll in com ma nd with Wa lker right on top of him for second. On the start of th e second round . W alker jumped into the lead with Van Ack er glued to his rear tire. Chuck Okimoto. who DNF the first moto r was pushing both of th em rel entlessly. Wal ker barely ha d brea thing room as Van Acker tried for an outside be rm but overshot it and gave his rival a two second lead. Clos ing in quickl y. Van Acker was now wheel -to-wheel and taking a su per tig ht inside lin e. slip ped a wheel under for th e lead . Coming around for th e white flag lap. Wa lker was flying and crossed the finish line . up alongside, but sett ling for second. W ith yet ...
