Tom Brooks worked his way th rough the pack fro m a back row start and when the first four bikes crested the hill , Brooks was running fifth . O n the uphi ll he wheelied all the wa y to the top flas hi ng a' peace sign . By la p four Brad McLeod moved into third , A nd v . Bolander was next. In the wash', Randy Blevin s and M ike Sixberry d id so m e fa n cy m a nueve r in g in t h e whoo ps, Blevins stayed a hea d . Ri ch Mathers crest ed the hill behind Six be rry , m ade the do uble jum p then started in to the' m ot o sec tion with Dennis Vett er a nd Eric MacCracken right behind . Ma cCracken held first Amateur, Ed Kissell was seco nd , five bikes back , As the last lap started, most of the positions were lock ed in , H owell had no threat to his lead as he maintained for the overall win . The Pros dazzled the crowd for 30 m inutes then the ladies lined up to sho w their stuff. Lap one had Sue " Flyin" Fish in front with the Queen of the Desert in seco nd, Trudy Beck. Dede Cates got on th e throttle and got by Trudy while Carey Steiner poured the premix to he r scoot and moved ' into third as Trudy got off and had to work back into position , Roxie Klatt was running fourth at the halfway point , Trudy was ba ck in fifth being pressed by Dawn Paiemen t and Lynette Zuber . T he wh it e flag went up and Sheila Hopkins sta rted o ut on the last lap trying to ca tc h 'Lyn ett e , M ercedes Gonzol es and M el issa Thunderpussy wer e in pu rsuit. The checkered fell and Su e Fish , with a huge lead , clinched a trop hy . J im O 'Neal a nd Robert Bosch spo nsored ra ce six, sta rring the Old T imers , When this bunch took off it loo ked like the San Diego fr eeway at 5 :00 pm . When th e m ass of red go t sorted ' out , th e racing raced , J erry J o h nson , Ma rvin O lson , Bla ckie Lewis and Dick Man n su rvived the Masters C lass, Don Jensen , Basil Sanchez, Ken C layton and Chuck W oo d y rounded out the Experts. The A mateurs were Fra n cis C hristensen , Tom Brown , Tom Vetter a nd Roy Sanchez, Ray Arnold , Bill R yan and Da n H a rris wer e the Novice winners. W ebco and Bosch backed the Senior divisio n . Sixth was Dick Camp, Rich W atson ch a rged in at fifth, jus t ahead were J oh n White , Quickdraw McG ra w and th e ba ttl e fo r th e lea d . N a te Sciaqua a nd Bill Saltzman changed pos it ion seve ral times , but Saltzman a lwa ys ch a rged ba ck , Seiaqua waited until th e last lap, got by and berzerked it for the win , Kawasaki and Bosch sponsored -rhe ninth event, the Pioneers. Dick Mann led from start to finish , well as soon as he passed AI Baker that is, Walt Axhelm couldn't get by Eddit Mulder and had to settle for fourth , M ike Goodwin made a comeback after his road race geroff, The very last race of the day was the Yamaha and Bosch-backed four stroke e xtravigan za . Baker and Mann ju m ped off their previous mounts and lined up for the fina le. Old man Mann had the lead , but a lad named J im O 'Neal ca me to race too , and what a d ice they had . Not just th e ordinary straight aw ay passing but the turns , Finally O 'Neal got the lead fo r good and held it. AI Baker took seco nd, Den n is Briggs third . Bill Wright o n a H onda took fourth , Dave Rogaczewsk i was next on a borrowed TT500 : The o ld No rt ons, Gol d Stars a nd Triumphs we re a pleasa nt sound and a spl en di d performance . W ell it's ha rd to describe the feeling of the clo sing. of a great Grand Pri x. You're kinda happy, but then kinda sa d because we ha ve to wait a whole . yea r for the ne xt one. Clearly Brad Lackey and Heikki Mik'la are on a different level of performance ail, other Grand Prix riders. American ctators saw the proof of this at Carlsbad the second moto when they battled the t twenty minutes and in so doing put minute on the rest of the field.
