CA 93017 The Experts had an interesting ra ce . The first moto was mostly a one man show with Don J ense n (Mai) leading from start to finish . Not far behind were Ed Schiedler (Yam) and Chuck Strause ( Ma i) . The second round . however . was totally different . Chuck Woody (Yam) and Earl Nichols (Yam ) traded back and forth for the lead throughout the moro, with Woody eventually winding up on top. Jensen took third which gave him first overall ahead of Woody and Schiedler, An interesting side note is that club president Bill Bird (Yam) finished the first moro with two flat tires . The N ovice class was taken by Ray Arnold on board the same Yamaha 500 that.took grandson Mark Ellis to third place in the four-stroke Nationals last year. Resu lts M ASTERS: 1. CA , AUG . 20 Honda of Corona 's Phill ip Thorstensen pulled off his first 250cc Expert class win in spite of some hot pressure from Dave Rose (Hon) . In the first moto , it was Rose who pulled the holeshot , but Thorstensen was in close pursuit. On lap three Thorstensen slipped past Rose and got onto the lead. From there on in, it was Thorstensen all the way. He finished with a healthy lea d ahead of Rose . R ick Lee (SUI) and Pry or Cam p bell (SUI). The second round was more of the same.' Thorstensen shot into the lea d a nd d isa ppea red . Rose a nd Lee diced for a little while, bu t eventually Rose pulled away. The fin ishi ng order was identical to moto one . In the 125cc Expert class C raig Gorm ley (Ya m) fina lly overcame mecha nical troubles that h ave plagued him for several weeks just long enough to take first p lace. The first rnoto was all Gormley's, He got the holeshot and led from start to finish . Ken O d ra (Yam) held down second place throughout the race, but he was feeling enormous pressure from Bu rt Siler (SUI). T he next time a ro u nd. it was Sile ' who led the charge t'l the first turn . He held on to the lead for five la ps before_ Gormley came up from behind and made his move . Siler we nt on to second place behind Go rmley but ahead of Odra and Ric Em mal (Yam). The 250cc Novice class saw Dave Stewart (Yam) from Dale's Modern Cycle ta ke an overdue first overall. In the first race he was in ' th ird off the line. bu t inside of five la ps he was in command. David Loyd (Yam) cruised in to second spo t after dici ng with Ken Reeves (SUI). who DNF, a nd Ro ber t R ip ley (SUI) . Mike .O 'Neal finished third ahead of R ipley a n d Ma rk W right (Hon): In the final round . it was O'Neal who got the jump and led the ra ce right down to th e last lap. Stew a rt got by hi m with just seco nds re maining in the moto and took fir st overall. Ripl ey finish ed third ahead of Reeves arid Mark Branch (SUI). .
