Sal Hoffman worked well for third over Bob Tron;' on theJoseph's Special. New Novice Pat Krzrarich brought back the upstart stuff in heat five , winning over Jerry Warren and Steve Carrillo as pole sitter Paulson had trouble finding any gear. and then the wrong one. Novice Rod Sullivan likewise surprised rookie Expert Danny Houge in the final heat with another good race that shows the young man's potential that he has shown all year since his O akd a le win . Sullivan's heat was so good he was pole man for the first semi, but wound up on the rear wheel of Ryan Seidel at the checkered. Do n Carlyle was on the bubble in the third, with only a lOman main to fill with four semi's, and the clock determining who would go . . Rod Spe ncer brought the O ssa back to norm in the second semi, lea ding a ll la ps in front of Pa t K and Steve Adkins. Graham was on the po le of his semi as starter Jerry Ken ned y went up on th e haybale, but found hi mself in the cheater's box along with half the front row . When the green finally went, he came from dead last in the first comer to the fr ont in just a matter of a few laps . It wasn 't easy with Ken Robicheaux and Rich Luhdorff running hot along with Sal Hoffman and Da n Houge, but the classy rookie got it all together and wound up the winner with Robicheaux and Houge off to the main for the ride. The final semi was yet another thriller with Novice Burnett once again showing his hind pans to the veteran Hocking. It just wasn't to be though, and at mid-point Hocking put the pressure on Burnett and young John just couldn't stand up . As Hocking would slowl y work on both sides of the Yamaha fast kid , he would become just a little more wary and finally as the white came out , Hocking gor 'a wheel underneath in turn four as they got on the gas. Hocking ran over the youngster's foot and nearly lost him in the fence as they went for it. In the early laps of the last .sern i Alex Jorgensen got off in a hard highside that got him run over by the following pack. Luckily, he only got the wind knocked out of him . The 20 -lap main event got start ed with action as Ryan Seidel highsided down the back straight and wound up in the Area Ambulance. but not hurt. 'T h e restart brought In a lternate Ca rlyle , but it was the Hock in complete control over Novices Burnett and Robicheaux. while Rod Spencer and Rick Graham regrouped and made their way to the front . Graham took over second early with Burnett trying to hold back Spencer, but to no avail. Hocking continued to pull away past the halfway point with Graham holding off Spencer and Sullivan making his way through to fourth over Mike Delacy. All of a sudden, Delacy threw the Yamaha World motor a little too low in turn one and lost it, taking out Houge and Carlyle and bringing out the red on the 15th lap. After removing the bodies and bikes. no one was injured. it was decided to continue with five laps to go, mostly at the insistence of Hock the Rock and the over 7,000 fans that were having a good time at the free show . The inline restart was the typical mess of trying to get everyone lined up p ro pe rly and even with Hocking gettin g the last tum around and what sho uld have been a great ro lle r, it was I Graha m wi th the big start over ' Spencer and the Novice briga d e. It wasn't for lo ng though as Hocking ( regrouped his effort and came back to take the lead on the back straight. H ocking came down the front straight' in com plete control and just as the fans got seated he got passed down the back side by Graham and they had to get up and cheer again and stayed up in anticipation of Hocking getting it back. Bu t as they came down the front side. it was evident that the Hock was .h aving trouble as Spencer got by and then the next corner Sullivan made it good. Mercifully. the checkered came out as Hocking's rear tire went flat on the bottom with Pat K in for fifth and his best main event finish over Burnett and Carlyle. the only others left running.
