Merrill had t he win in th e second mot o , but a third in th e first moto wiped him out, as all Meyer had to do was stay rig h t behind Merrill in the second moto for th e overall win . Scott Bu lla rd mad e o ne o f h is infrequent appearances and gr abbed a third overall over new rid er Kurt Fryling. The ATC riders were out in increasing numbers : th e two to p classes being the 9I ·11 2cc and th e 113 · I32cc classes . In t he 91,1 I2 cc class, point leader J im Babbitt went on his head in the first moto and had to scramble for a win in th e second round to come up with a th ird overall as Bob Gilliam put together a win and a third for the overall. Mitch Myrick, running second to Babbitt in the class point standings, picked u p two points on Ba b bitt as he sq ueaked in for second overall . The 13-132cc was th e biggest ATC class of the year with 17 riders going, a nd although it was a hard fought victory it wound u p being a ll Todd Tierney for t he seco nd straight week. Tierney had to come fro m behind int he second moto for th e win with Pat O 'Dell providing the co m petit ion . In the 90cc Stock class , Kenny Ea rle once agai n proved that when he show s up the ra ce is for seco nd , a nd th at is what point leader Steve Wright aga in found out. Wright 'S po int lead is not in too mu ch danger however as Earle is o n ly pi cking up tw o po ints an a ppea ra nce o n Wrig ht , who ne ver misses a race . B r u ce Hartsuyker sco red firsts in both th e Sto ck a nd Modi fied divis ion s. a nd Thor Bjom esrad took conv incing wins in both th e 9-11 Sto ck and Modified Mini s, The 12-16 Intermed iat e Mini ~Hiss gained a new member in the form of Kenny Dunlap wh o cert a in ly let non e of his boosters down as he grabbed off a third and a second in the Modified and Stock Mini d ivisions respectively. Both these classes were won by Chris Swift who is now knocking on the door of Expert sta tu s. Swift really had to work for th e wins as Du n lap and R ay Tethe rton were rig ht with him each mot o . In the Modi fied division a rare slide down by Du nl a p may have cost him a class win , as he h ad a big lead a t th e time and see med to lose some concent r atio n after tha t. In th e 12- 16 Stock Novice class . the name Du nl ap sti ll popped u p tho ugh as siste r Ap ril ca me in for a cha rging second overall. Go ing back to th e Hartsuyker win in the 12· 16 Sto ck Novice class , Bru ce cou ld n't have picked a better race to go ·two for two , as Escondido Suzuk i had placed a $12 .50 gift certificat e on th e win for eac h moto! T he motorcycle classes feat ure8 a co m p lete domi nation by Curtis RQugh in both th e 100s and the 125s, a lt hough new Int e rm ed ia te Jam es Clou d gave some real com petlt)on before a seized engi ne put him out for th e d ay, In th e Novice classes, Tim Ha le had a great da y with win s in both th e Stock and Modified !OOccclasses and a third in the big 125cc Novice class . The 125cc class featured a dazzling disp lay of rid ing by newcomer Dea n Gurlio lt who ran fourth to favorite Mark Howell in the first moto after starting out way' back in t he 17 rider class and wound up p icking off a rider a tu rn literall y in t he last lap . In th e second moto , Gurholt blasted the whole fie:ld for a big lead wit h Howell tra pped wa y back, Just as How ell moved up he slid down and had to do it a ll over again . In this effort Howell fa iled by a ha lf bikclength at the chec ker to pass third -place Randy La Coste and had to settle for second in the tie -breaker loss to Gurholt . In t he meantime. T im Hale co mbined a fif th a nd a second for a tie -breaker third over Scott Brown . Hale is on ly 12 years old and though a little young and ligh t for the full size b ikes. definitely p refers them over the 80cc m a ch ines.
