KARL OKAMOTO Sacramento, CA Kearns' wilderness meeting date changed Our scheduled Aug. 19 wilderness meeting has been postponed due to slow progress on bylaws and incorporatio n of the proposed organization. We'd prefer to have the group's proposed charter. fund -raising apparatus available for discussion since, obviously•.that's ou r next step to form a n entity able to compete legally, fina nci ally and politically with exis ting o rganizations such as the Sierra Cl ub . I will let you know when the new date will,be . OWEN KEARNS,JR , Bakers field , CA VCGP results request More than two months ago . I ra n the Virginia City Grand Prix, finished and received my finisher's pin. I think I d id fa irly well , but how in the hell am I supposed to know since I have not received any information from these people who put it on ? I am sure you are aware that you have had nothing on it , as I have looked breathlessly week after week awaiting the results, In case any of the officials from the VCGP read your paper, I would like them to take into consideration that we (my riding partner and I) paid $40 to enter . drove from Los Angeles to Virginia Ci ty (gas was $60 to $80 ), plus food on the wa y up th ere and ba ck , booze on the way up and back, not to mention the purchase of two cowboy hats. We probably spent in th e excess of over $200 in combination with the wear and tear on our bikes and bodies. The least the people from VCGP could do, is to let me know what pos ition I finis hed . My riding num b er was 169 , I ran in Su nday's race; there were 13 in ou r class. I think it was called the " Ol d Timers." Thanks a heap for you r help . RI CHARD P . WILSON 17538 St udebaker Road Cerritos, CA 9070 I Burns to Bend postponed I regret to inform you that the Burns to Bend crosscountry race has been postponed. Two days before 800 fliers were to go out in the mail, the Harney Basin M.C . withdrew their support. In the best interest of the riders , we decided to postpone the event until next spring to give our small club , (five members) enough time to put together a quality race. When I told you about our plans for this event. it a ppeared in your Latest Poop col umn. and the response was tremen d ous , -You h ave a lot of followers he re in the Northwest . T omorrow. we a re sen d ing out about 800 fliers about our next race , the ni nth a nnual H igh Dese rt 100 , Would ap preciate it if you could mention th e postponem en t of the Burns to Bend event . T ha nks. LAR RY ULRICH Cascade M.C. Bend, OR A Declaration of War Before we start a war , I think it woul d be wise to identify the enemy . En vironmentalists! In or der to ex pand on th e point, it is proper to po int out that the bureaucracy in the U ,S. Fed eral Go verment is tryi ng to put upo n motorcyclists in every way they ca n. If you think about the situation, I think that most of these restrictive regulations from EPA , BLM , U.S. Forest Service, NHTSA. and all are instigated by one source: environmentalists, A few cases in point are the current EPA noise regulations , alledged damage to the ecology by cowtrailing and organized events on public land such as endures. hare and hounds and any other off-road events, You may say you 've heard all this before, and that you already know who the enem y is, Well . if you are an off-road rider. you probably do. Bu t i,5 doesn't stop there. The posey · sniffing groups are as much against the on. road guys as they are against the offroad types, A typical banner environmentalists raise against · the road rider is noise pollution , and the agency they are stirring up is the EP~. It a ll boils down to the fact that if you are a m otorcyclist , your freedom is being eroded by the edicts of the aforementioned governmental agencies . These edicts or rules are being made because of . intense pressure from the environmentalists . O n a philosophical note, I would like to point out that these same environmental groups a re affecting th e cost of everything from food to building materials. Somethirnes one would think t ha t th ey are hell -bent to ~ destroy the American way of life . One major problem is that we are not properly organized. In order to organize people into a politically active group, there must be a medium for organization. We have iliat medium , th e American Motorcyclist Association , But for what ever reason. motorcyclists in Cal ifornia a nd elsewhere who are members are not trying to get their brothers to join, There is on e wa y to counter these socalled environmental groups, an d that is for every concerned motorcyclist to join the one association that already has a legislative department, a Washington, DC lobby and council , a nd is fu lly supported by the motorcycle industry. The Sierra Club has 82,500 members in Ca lifornia and they push the state government around like a b unch of puppets , If we had 100,000 AMA members in California with all the members on a computerized maili ng list for quick communication, just think of the pressure we could put on the politicians. By the way , AMA already has the compute capability. If we are going to win the war we . must have an army of sufficient strength and resolve to get the job done. We must act soon and decisively as a group or we are going to find that we have lost . Therefore I charge each of you with the responsibility of joining AMA , the association that 'c a n get the 'ob done. By this I'm not telling you that 'you shouldn't ride any of the other promoting orga nizations. I am saying that you should bel ong to the AMA . Think about this : If we could increase to 100,000 AMA members in California by October. 1978, .1 ca n assure you that we can elect a congressional contingent that is sym pathet ic to our ca use .
