Tom Schell rolled in first overall in Saturday's Sidehack and Unclassified rider finale, with the team of Richard Langosh/Duane McDowell (Tri 750) taking first hack honors. Sunday was topped with a win by Larry Roeseler (Hus) in the Open Junior/Experts as he made up lor a flat tire in the 250cc's while chasing winner Bruce Ogilvie. The 175cc Beginner /Novice race opened' the festivities Saturday. Trace Willis (Yam) took the overall victory and 175cc Novice win. Second was Don Urbanek on his little Yamaha 100. John Hura (Yam) followed for third overall and second 175cc was Richard Prouty {Suz),_ ,who fmished fourth overall with Mike Bird (Suz) in tow for second right behind. Tom Grant (Hus) scored for first 125cc Expert and third overall. First 175cc Junior was Robert Pfetzing (Yam) with first 125cc Junior Clarke Coleman (Suz) rolling in after him. Jeff Moeller (Hus) snagged the top' spot in the 250cc Beginner/Novice event, followed by S. Brunelle (Suz) and M. TInajero (Yam), the frontrunners in the Novice class. Tolman Geffs came in eighth overall to take first Beginner. J. W. Jenks (Yam) and John Benedict (-) were next across the finish line as second and third Beginners. The biggest class of the day was in the unclassified riders and the crazy hackers, with the solos going off first. Schell (Suz) made himself the quickest of the lot as he won overall. Garry Faulks (Suz) was second, first Open. Steve Lutz (Suz) and Erwin Ritter (Yam) filled second and third 250cc and fourth overall Mark Zela (Yam) flew in sixth for first 175cc, while Les K~t.cpaJll .(~uzJ t~k• .first I ~~~c .a.nd ninth overall. Dennis Holt bombed in on a Yammie 80 at 17th overall for ftTSt 100cc. In the sidehack races, Richard Langosh and Duane McDowell (Tri) put British tradition ahead ofJapanese zoot-capri as they won the class over Dennis Kimball and Tony Pierce on their trick Kawasaki/Wasp rig. The hack team of Bart Crandall and Ron Swart wheeled in third. Sunday's racing went off with the Seniors and Women going first. Lars Larsson (Hus) made easy pickings of the field to take the win. He was disqualified, however, when it was determined that he was riding out of his class. Even at age 37, Lars is still too young for the Seniors, the class he rode in. The win was handed to Nate Sciaqua (Yam). AI Stinebaugh (Suz) was scored for second overall and first 175cc Senior Expert. Dick Camp (Yam) followed to come in for second 500cc Senior Expert behind Sciaqua. Fourth overall was Francis Christensen (Yam) for first 250cc Senior Expert. Lynn McGraw was seventh overall, good enough for first 500cc Senior Amateur, while Al Smith (Yam) trailed behind him for first 500cc Senior Novice. Sheila Hopkins (Yam) and Roxie Klatt folJowed each other to take second 250cc Expert Woman and first 125cc Expert Woman respectively. Bruce Ogilvie (H-D) had a few dose calls along the way as he took the overall in the 250cc Junior/Expert clash. For most of the way, Larry Roeseler (Hus) was chewing on his rear fender, looking as if he might go for it at any time. This didn't happen however, when Larry's' Husky flattened its front tire about two-thirds of the way through the race. Ogilvie had his own' problems. Coming through the start/finish chute, he was trying to find out how much gas was in his tank. Instead of paying attention to the road, Bruce was so diverted that it was too late for him to a void crashing off the side of the hill that the pits were located on. Bruce's getoff was spectacular. but he was unhurt. He got back up, only to crash into a ditch later on. Still, Bruce hung in there to win. Mike Edkardt (Hus) took over for Roeseler to ftIl in for second while Fred Griego (Yam) scored third. The course was so fast for the Experts that the Juniors were totally smoked. Robin Busse (Yam) was eighth overall for first Junior, followed by Jery Marquis (Hon) with Dave Wentz (Yam) down two spots for third. RoeseIer got his revenge as he made his return to action in the Open Junior/Expert class. Off the line, Max Eddy (Yam) took the lead, followed by Craig Adams (KTM) and Roeseler. The three quickly split from the rest of the pack, and when they were all alone, Larry began to make his moves. With Eddy leading, Roeseler put the make on Adams as they were on the second lap. By lap three, Larry was beginning to reel Max in. By lap four, it was all over. Roeseler had done it was stretching out his lead. Even though Roeseler's lead never amounted to any more than five or 10 seconds over Eddy, there was no doubt as to who was in control. Roeseler took home the bacon, followed by Eddy. and Bill Tarling (KTM). Adams (aded back to sixth. Dave Conner (Hus) took first Junior, -" - -~:~- followed by Jeff Vaughn (Yam) and Pancho Spain (DMG). Official results as not available. Balentine, Kelly 11111 1·2 at eRe hare scrambles By Jerry G. Welton RAND, TN, CAL, AUG. 6 Riding identical Rod Koskituned KTM's, Bob Balentine and Tom kelly proved to be untouchable as they dominated California Racing Club Watermelon Scrambles. When the banner dropped at 8:45 a_m., the heat was already two steps from unbearable but once the riders got underway it was the last thing on their minds. At the road crossing just before the bomb it was Kelly with a slight adv",ntage over Balentine. Morgan Malocco (400 Yam) was next, pursued by hard-charging Chuck Miller (250 H·D) and Open .point leader Mike Mulconery (Mid Valey). Amateur Richard Zajic (250 Suz) was just ahead of Ken Upp (125 Yam) and John Foster (175 Baker R&D) with fellow Amateur Mark Moulett (250 CPW KTM) right on their tail pipes. Mike Easley (125 Baker) was also a top contender as the first wave of riders headed into a canyon and towards the ridges. About three miles out Miller got of hard injuring his leg. Sacrificing their top 10 starts, Zajic and Mouleu· stopped to aide Miller. Just before check one Balentine moved past Kelly for the lead, and for good. Kelly paced himself with Balentine as the duo moved away from the pack. Malocco was really going for it but he would have to work hard to it. Tony Harris (400 KTM) was moving up rapidly but was having problems with a well' known, nonentered rider holding him back. Amateur Steve Grenke (250 Yam) had some good moves and was now working within the top ten. After running through the canyons and ridges and heading towards the pits from Ca p C, Balentine still hadn't put much time on Kelly. But Kelly's goggles had been collecting dust and his vision was becoming obscured. When Balentine came through the pits he was looking quite impressive on the droppff. Kelly pulled in for new goggles and some quick moisture and he was off. Malocco was in next with Grenke running fourth ahe~d of Harris. Doug Beisner (250 Suz) was just ahead of the small bore battle between Upp and Foster. The Women's Division leader Lori Farmer (250 Yam) took a lengthy pit stop in order to remove cactus from her hand but did not lose any class positions. Bill VanderByl (250 CPW) led the Novice class at the end of the first loop after passing Scot Porter for the lead ·wne Porter got off. Larry Donaldson (400 Yam) was charging up front once again as were Paul Clifford (400 Yam). Mike Cappollo (400 Yam) and Paul VanderByl (250 KTM). Doug Behnke (250 Yam) was the first Beginner to go by with Eric Evans (250 Yam) not too far behind. Lightweight Mike Roth was running third with Rod Lacy )250 Yam) and Steve Binter on his 100cc YZ running in the top five. After the first 30 miles the _
