Mike's 10th win out of 12 nights of
racing at Ascot.
John Cook, one of the better riders
out of Northern California, came to
Ascot for the first time this season and
found the big oval much to his liking.
He won his heat race and went the
distance in the Handicap Main for the
victory. Bob Schwam "The Second."
as he has nicknamed himself, did take
second place.
Division Two honors went to Mark
Detter by an inch or two over Wayne
Ishii.
Morley
magnificent at
Costa Mesa
By Dennis Greene
COSTA MESA, CA, AUG. 4
Setting the record straight
last week I said that Brad oxley
got by Tom Morley for the win
in the Handicap Main event. I
was in error. Morley had been put
back to the 50·yard line on the restart
of that event. ]n fact it was Morley
who worked his way past slower riders
to end up second just behind Oxley.
This week, there was no question at
aU about Morley's finish. He won the
Handicap Main event in a fine ride,
quite reminiscent of his father, Stu,
one of the pioneers of the sport.
Mike Bast's luck is still bad. He
again failed to earn a ride in either
main event. There is definitely
nothing wrong with his riding, he just
has had every little thing that could go
wrong with a bike go wrong.
The Scratch Main event went to
Mark Cherry and, you guessed it, Bob
Schwartz took second! Bob has broken
every record in the books for second
place finishes. Schwartz flew out right
after the last race for New York, where
he will defend his East Coast World
title. Bob also received the Rider of
the Month award before the races got
underway.'
John Sandona is one of the better
Division Two riders who is moving into
First Division whenever there is an
o-pening. He kept his racing edge by
winning the Second Division Main
event just a hair ahead of Shawn
Moran.
Division Three honors went to
Danny Collins.
