Hendlcap Meln. 26 Sonny Nutter, a name from out of the past, won the Handicap Main event after a restart that sent Craig Schader out with a sore chin. For three laps, Dave Sims was so close that you could have covered them with a towel. As we get closer to the U.S. Speedway National, everyone is trying to sharpen their talents in Scratch racing. At this time, Alan Christian has the keenest edge of them all. Christian won the Scratch Main Event well out in front of Dennis Sigalos, Ron Preston and Mike Bast. Division Three honors again were won handily by Tom Burmeister, who now boasts a four out of five win record. Buffington buzzes Santa Ana By Ken Kellogg SANTA ANA, CA, AUG. I Brian "The Bumble Bee" Buffington continued his string of constant wins to remain one of the top riders at Santa Ana Stadium. In the Scratch Main, Brian moved into the second spot during the third lap and fought northern rider John Cook for first place. Brian was not intimidated by Cook and passed him during the last lap. John had to settle for a second and Wayne lewis a third. Seventeen-year-old Mike "Spid~rman" Bloom rode a hard race and had to fight every inch of the way with John Cook and Glenn Hutchison. Mike has been very impressive in past weeks and seems to have recovered quite well from his knee injury of a couple of weeks ago. _ In the Second Division Scratch Main, a very familiar name prevailed. Keith Crisco, the "Crisco Kidd" has begun to ride outside more than he used to, and is finding himself in first place in most of his heats by the second lap. Keith did just that as he defeated Scott Black and Jim Turner. In the Division Two Hanidcap Main, Scott Black defeated former winner Robert Borg and Crisco in a hot and heavy race with all the riders taking turns in the lead. Scott mad; that decisio!, at the right time, the checkered flag. You would be almost guaranteed a good close race if you came just to watch th«; Junior speedway races. Again this week Juniors put on a fantastic show and there was a tie for first place. During the race-off, Sizemore's bike broke and Scott St. John was the winner. Division Three main winners are being decided on a point system. The winner was Paul Diguisippi. The track was in perfect condition and there were no serious crashes or injuries. Faas, Burmeister continue at San Berdoo By Dennis Greene SAN BERNARDrNO, CA, AUG. 2 The new Batman and Robin of Speedway seem to be Leni Faas and Tom Burmeister. For the fourth time in the past two weeks, both have won their divisions. Faas is on a comeback trail after breaking his collarbone opening night at Ascot, and Burmeister is new to Speedway and has only lost one event in six starts. Dan McNeill had all but dominated the Division Two riders and has been moved into the First Division. His debut was not too bad. He earned a ride in the Handicap Main event and was leading for a lap until his motor quit on the front straightaway. It was a tense moment as everyone sweryed to miss him. Dave Sims won that Handicap Main event with Gene Woods right beside him. In the Scratch Main event, Mike Bast's luck went bad twice. First, he was put out for breaking the starting tapes, but let back in when the starter said that he had pushed the button when Mike was backing up and that the tapes were stuck under his front fender.. By international rules, he should have been out just for letting his wheel go over the starting line. The race was restaned with Alan Christian taking the lead away from Bob Schwartz. Dave Sims overtook Schwanz in the third lap as Mike Bast got into one of those tail-over·teakettle wheelies. He jumped to safety and stood there looking as Alan Christian took the checkered flag. Ascot: 10 for Bast By Dennis Greene GARDENA, CA, AUG. 3 Mike Bast put it all together in the Scratch Main, puJling off the win by the biggest margin so far this season. He took the checkered flag before the second place rider, Bob Schwanz, had come onto the front straightaway. This was
