CA ,JULY 23 Lining up on the Viewfinders' courses were the 250cc classes; San Gabriel hosted the Seniors and women. In the 250cc Experts 16 Bruce Ogilvie . (H-D) cha rged from fourth to way. out in front firs t. "Chargin" Chuck Miller scrapped his way to second overall, first Amateu r. Brad Henson. with bike problems. cruised in at th ird. Second Amateur Kern Park, Mike Eckardt . Paul Christensen , Cordis Brooks and G regg Thomas, Jeff Matthews and new Amateur Rich Zajic rounded out th e top 10. Scott pinge r ~v.er~~!fi e the r~dge run , th e off ca m ber edges and th e lon g downhill for th e Novice overa ll. Kenny O viatt , Tini Jasper , T im Nething a nd Bob Fo rtune cross ed t he line for th e fin ish . . T ru d y Beck dominated th e Women's di vision with Kell y Wiseman staving off Lori Farmer for second. Diana Elias was next . th en J olen e Payne, Lynette Zuber, Linda Sh atka and Diane Blauer crossed the lin e . Nancy Caselli, Sandy Love , Cindy Max and Bon ita Kind also braved the heat for a finish . The feeble folk chased one very fast "Sm okebom b" Gaetz , who wracked up his first win of the day. Ron Bebo, Dick Camp and Bob Doig followed. George Zuber ended up first 250cc , Chris Ch ristensen and 080x fini shed second and third. Bill Stewart ran first C . with Ron Milligan second and John McCown third . Nine o'clock started the Trai lb ikes a t the Viewfinders. C bik es at San Gabriel. Kevin Hopkins kicked buns in the T ra ilbike class ; Cliff Thomas, Jeff Robbins. Dick Kelsey. second Amateur Oren Beck and Pete An d elman follow ed. Novice king Don .Urba nek cleaned hou se with Tim Sin cla ir , Bob Ch arters, Gunnar Hassenplug, rounding th e turn for the fini sh with Karl Smith , Larry Berg and Harvey Ishman behind. Charlie Hamill had a pie plater giving him fits in th e C bik e class for a wh ile . but Hamill thrives on pressure a nd pulled off another win. Behind him wer e Steve W ebb , Gary Charters, Tom Allen and Ru ss Jenkins . John Lawson bagged first Amateur, Paul Kr ause seco nd , Ed Ogden third . . Novice C biker Mitch Sm iley won over Donnie Morrison. Rick Beck , Mike Smith and Scott Atchison . T om Willis a nd Jeff Giffo rd took Beginner win s. Brent Leckick , Kevin Ca se and Jim Huizar finished nex t. By 10 o'cl ock it was hot as heck . Viewfinders had th e wom en and Seniors , San Gabriel had the.big bikes. T ru d y did it again , Wiseman , Payne , Blauer, Elias , Love , Shatka and Jeanette Long took the checkered. "Smokebomb" smoked in the Seniors, winning his second race of the day. Ron Bebo crashed but held second with Dick Camp th ird. Bud Gawing finished first C with Bill Stewart second , Dale Dorman third . Zuber a nd Christensen, then Burley were the 250cc winners . Next were Bob Midkiff, Open Novice, Bud Gawing. C Novice, Pat Gunther, 250cc Amateur. Ed Zarp seemed to have an overall in the bag in the .Open Amateur/Experts but Bob Balentine (KT M) methodically worked past for the win . Bill Becker bagged third with' Lee Scheffers getting first Amateur followed by lack T rotter. . Bob Cronkite, Charlie Fowler and Mike Kemberfing. John Verant won the Novice race, Chris Bosen was second and Craig Weaver, Gary White. Randy Basdin, Jesse james and Dave Meadows ended in that-order. "" ., .. ~ .. . .. .. At 11 o'clock th e heat was unbearable. C bikers ran at Viewfinder land , 250 cc's at the Bellringers . Hamill had problems, Charters crashed twice but held on to th e C bike overall. Steve Webb , Hamill , Bob Rundquist. Ed Ogden and Mike Goodwin were behind. Greg Winters . Mike Easley , Mark Nelson and Mike Martin took the checkered ,. in tha t order in the Novice class . J eff e Gifford. T om Elias and Pat Hen esey were Beginner winners .. Ogilvie ; a true champion, made winning th e 250cc clas s again look so easy. Kern Park took up Miller's spot when Chuck dropped out. Henson took second Expert , follow ed by . number 610 . Eckardt , ' Johnston , Greene , Zajic , Varner and Lee . Scotti Dinger bagged a controversial Nov ice win over Ken Ov iatt. T im Jasper . John :> Basso . J im Kurisu , and Kev Armstrong follow ed . . , Big Bikes were last at the rnoviefolk, Trailbikes at San Gabe . Balentine's secret to winning is sim ple, get in front and don't let a n yone pass. Lee Scheffers followed for first Amateur. with Ed Zarp , Bill .Becker and Bob Cronkite following . Rogo Eckhardt and "Q u ickdra w" McGraw were next. Chris Bosen made up for last time tak ing th e Open Novice overall. Number 781 , Jesse James, Craig Weaver and Dave Meadows filed in behind as Ken Hausing, Tony Leyrer, R ich Christensen, GeorgeJaggard and Dave Chase finished ; Back in the pack was Bob Ziegler racing his first desert race. Kevin Hopkins made it two Trailbike wins. Cliff Thomas was second , with Pete Andelman th ird. Don Urbanek continued to dominate the Novice field. winning handily over Bob Charters, Bill Mattox , Andy Cassio and Harvey Ishman.
