The Great Motocross In The Sky By Bang Bang Bobo Ingram MAMMOrn LAKES, CA ,JUNE 17-18 Going to the great motocross track in the sky doesn't mean what it may imply. It only means traveling to Mammoth, a climb to '~ ight thou' and then racing motocross for two days. Not an easy chore, but a lot of fun anyway. This event is Iooked forward to by the Over the Hill Gang once a year . It 's the Old Timer's MX Association National Championship. All OTHGA chapters were represented , includi ng our most recently fornted chapter from Reno . They call themselves the "Sierr a" chapter (we hope The Sierra Club doesn't mind). OTHG Experts put on a show that will be remembered for a long time. Absurd Al Olson , Lanky Larry Shoemaker, Jungle Joe Brown and th e champ, Runny Ron Gibson, all rode like the old Pros that they are . Absurd Al led the field in almost every moto , only to ha ve it taken away by Lanky Larry or Runny Ron and at the checkers it would be Runny Ron out front in all but one of his motos, In that one he drew a th ird. Ron swept th e series with a low score of only eight, which gave him the overall win. Absurd Al and Lanky Larry both finished with 18 points each, but it was the tie-breaker last moto which ruled . Lanky Larry took second place with Al finishing a strong third . Jungle Joe was fourth followed by Rancid Redgie, Maniac Mike and Rathole Rocky. The exciting, unpredictable Amateur class of 22 evenly-matched riders went off the line Saturday. By the end of three motos it was Revlon Ron (Sierra) holding the winning number, four . Sunday told a different story . Jumbo Jim Chandler (North) carne back strong and evened the score to take the win away from Ron, who ' , -, , . . .. . ', '~ ~ .. ~ ~ , placed second, followed by Mernie Irwin (Sierra), Driller Dale, Phast Phil and Ragged Rodney. In Division A Intermediates, it was Chris Bender (Sierra) who wrapped up th e win with a low of 14 points. In a fight for second and going into the last moto wi ~h on ly one point difference, Hang-an-Harold and Come-anChuck put on an exh ibition of skillfu l rid ing . The result was a tie in po in ts and second place was garnered by Hang-an-Harold because of his last m?to win . Come-an-Chuck placed third ahead of Majestic Mojeske , who . was a heavy favorit e on Saturday. In one of the most exciting rac es of the long weekend , B-Division Intermediates had spectators hopping at trackside. Buffalo Bill Norman and Authouse Allen Bray (Sierra) pleased the crowd with the ir relentless race for first . Going into the last mo to with onl y one . point difference, eac h knew he had to win . The result was a tie in points, but once again th e last rnoto tie-breaker made Buffalo Bill (Nort h) the winn er. Au thouse Allen settled for second . Grabbing the holeshot and lea ding for a lap or two was Ol' Bang Bang Bobo, who ga ve way to youth and stamina and gratefully accepted th ird . place, Decomposed Dan, Jackkmfe John , and Jowls J im followed . The lowest score for the weekend was tallied by Novice Beaver Bob (Sierr a), who busied himself int o winning each of his six motos in an almost no-contest race. Gary Fleckse r (North) was close behind the Beaver for second place. Brian Cullen (Sierra) no , not the Brian Cullen of the L.A . Rams , I checked ... who is nicknamed Bottleneck Brian, totaled out his points to take third overall. Bill Bailey (Vegas) was fourth ahead of Mike Tucker (Vegas) and John Werth (North). ~heBa 8423 ROSEMEAD BLVD.
