(Continued from page 23) In the Amateur class Kid Coffma n took off like a tu rpentined cat, with Dick Alexander rig ht on his tail. The Kid led for a few laps until Ra y Sanchez figu red out how to get his bike out of low gear. That was all she wrote . Ra y blew everyone in the weeds. Ral ph Cam er on took the lead in th e Novice class. but Wayne Powell aced Ralp h out . It was tight with Bill Ryan and Don Hobson in the th ick of it. Bill got by everyone to tak e the win. with Wa yne second . and Ralph taking third. The Master and Expert classes took off together . Expert Manny "T he Flying Flea" Dauber got the holeshot, Manny forgot how to stop at the far tum and just kept going. Moving Marvin Olsen took over and rounded the track like clockwork. Marshall J ennings and Blackie Lewis battled it out for second and th ird in the Master class. Earl Nichols grabbed the lead in the Expert class. Sam Jones. coming from the back of the pack. was in second place on lap fou r and finished th ere . Good ride Sam l Ou r new Expert , Chuck Woody, was right there all the way and took third place. Between motos, Marvin Olsen had to change the front axle on his bike. Fifteen gu ys offered helpful hnts , but no one picked up a tool. Ma rv just ignored everyone. which is just as well; if he had listened to all th e advice given he would still be there. When I got home , my wife asked how the races went. then said. "Happy Anniversary." I said . "ah , oh yea h, sam e to you : ' She asked if I knew how long we had been married . and I replied that I feel like I've never been unmarried. CA ,JULY 2 Placing aside the eight first places in four classes taken by Scott Burnworth (Suz) in his professional manner at Barona Oaks, 26 the n you can . say Greg Conradson (Kaw) from Scottsdale, AZ, was the big winner. In the California Mini Motorcycle Club's meet for Minis and I25s . Conradson won his two motos and then a runoff moto for overall winner of two divisions in the I25cc Novice class. In each race he opened an excess of 100 yards between first and second flace . and then he held the margin 0 safety to the finish . For Burnworth. it was first at the finish in all of his races though SCOtt Hamilton (Yam) led for a while in the 125cc class. Hamilton finished with two fourths for a third place in the class. With lots of style, Eric Collins (Yam) was swift in second place to Burnworth in the 105cc Open class on both ou tings. Collins also won the 83cc Expert class for stock cycles. Of several out of state riders, one was 'from back East ; another. Mike Carpenter from Tucson. AZ, placed third in the 83cc Stock 12·years and over runoff for two divisions of riders. Barnes best at Sunrise Valley MX Opener By Donna Hodgin & Ron lawson Photos by Ron lawson ADELANTO , CA,JULY 2 Sunrise Valley Cycle Park (formerly 395 Cycle Park) re opened its gates Sunday for a full . day of racing and fun . Promoter George Spellman was pleased with the turnout and has big plans for the future of th e desert motocross track. The biggest winner of the day was Mark Barnes (Yam) , who captured the 125cc Pro class , took second in the 250cc Pro class and won the team race with his partner Brian Batterson. In ," the first rnoto of the 125cc Pros . it was Andy Jefferson (Suz} who shot into the ·Iead . Burt Siler , Barnes and Ralph Purinton (Suz) were right on his tail for the first few laps , then he began to open a small lead. Barnes spent most of the early laps locked in traffic , but soon it was a two-way battle. Jefferson was on the gas , but Barnes was unstoppable. It was on the 10th lap that Barnes had the lead dropped into his lap as Jefferson fell . He cruised in for an easy first ahead of Purinton. Jefferson and Siler . In the next rnoto , it was Jefferson with th e holeshot aga in . but Barnes was close behind. Lap four saw Barnes make his .rnove and the race could have ended right there . All the ' way to the checkered flag the order was Barnes. Jefferson and Purinton. In the 250cc class. Barnes had a little more competition. SCOll .Q uick (Suz) took the holeshot of moto one. but Barnes was right behind. In the first two laps. the two of them opened a big lead. then Quick began to fall back when his fron t brake loosened itself. Danny Burtt (Suz) moved into second as Barnes disappeared in the lead.· In the meantime. Tim Welker (Yam) and Andy Jefferson (Suz) were moving up from bad starts. They passed Quick on the sixth lap and then got by Burtt on the seventh. It seemed like there was little hope for them to move up an y farther, however. because Barnes was just too far gone.
