The TT is th e 17th a nn ua l a t Ascot Park in Gardena , bu t again this yea r the Ascot _ affair is more than just a TT, On Frid a y nigh t, J uly 14th . J .C . Agajanian an d the Gardena Cham ber of Commerce agai n host th e Gardena Gold Cup half mile for Expert , J unior a nd Novice riders. This event firs t started back around 1969 and Keith Mashburn gave the then-new Yamaha 650 twin its first win, defeating Triumph -mounted Jimmy adorn in a real bar banger that found Mashburn tearing off adorn's clutch handle - it was that close at Not so. Skip has been cleared to rid e the Sears Point event , but not th e Ascot TT. The doctor felt that Skip could tuck in and ho ld on in a road rac e, but there was no way he could pitch it right a nd left and hit the fam ed Ascot jump too many times and sti ll stay healthy. The event lapsed and was then revived and is now going to be the sixth annual Fr iday night bash and the final half mile before the last National of the season on September 30 . Rick Hocking is the only two-time winner and Dave Aldana is the only rider to ever win the half mile on Friday night and th en come back and win th e National TT on Saturday night. The only non -Californian to ever win it was Corky Keener, four years ago. The Ascot on the 15th will feature Gary Scott. who will be looking for his sixth straight Ascot National TT victory aboard his ageless Triumph and Alex 'J orgy" Jorgensen, the Ascot May Nationa l half mil e winner, who will be trying to become the first rider ever to win both th e half mile and TT in the same yea r at Ascot . Jorgy . of cou rse, rod e his Ron Woods Norton to th e win in. Ma y and will again return on his self-owned BSA for his attempt at th e double. I got a letter a short time ago from a gu y who swea rs that the BSA was old when Dick Mann was sta rt ing out at a No vice! Scott is far off th e pace th is year but has owned the Ascot TT for a long time. Jorln' has been very close to winning for th e past two yea rs. It should be a two rider shoo t-out and a great night for the British . God Save the Queen and watch out for Steve Eklund on his Yamaha 750 twin . Due to th e April rainout , the Sears Point National road r ace will take place the d ay after th e Ascott TT. T his will be the only National road race in th e West thi s yea r, with th e lightweight 250cc even ts running on Saturday and all th e big bike stuff and the 75 mile National final on Sunday.
