Put one more in the record book for Mik e Bast. The Scratch Main event, or the Mike Bast Dash, Mike Bast won all Scratch Mains while Ron Preston took his second Handicap Main in a row at Costa Mesa. has seen only one winner all season. Billy Gray, of th e old Fath er Kn ows Best T V show and a First Division rid er for the past five yea rs, tried to show his d isapproval of a dark track. He, along with several other riders, say that th e show would be much safer with more light on the track and that t he fans would see a better show. Bill's prot est came in the form of a headlight mounted on th e front forks. As Dave Sims sat quietly in the pits waiting for the Handicap Main event, a young lady appeared out of nowhere and all but mauled him . No one had any idea where she came from or how she got past the security guards, but th ere she wast Dave probably was the most su rp rised guy in the pits , and that may be what it took to win the Handicap Main because that's just what he did. He outrode Schwartz and Bast for his second victory at Ascot, and right after th e Trophy Dash, the lady in red was back. This time the referee stepped in and told her in no uncertain terms that she was not at all welcome in the pit sl The Division Two half of the show was a hard battle all th e way with victory going to Dave DeTemple. Bast 's third, Preston's second at Costa Mesa By Dennis Greene COSTA MESA, CA , JULY 7 Billy Gray showed up at Ascot with a headlight. Ascot Division Two winner Dave DeTemple. Fans jams Inland for Bast, "Animal" duel there was no trouble, and everybody saw the best show so far th is yea r. Mike Bast was in great form , and he had to call on every bit of his talent to sta y out in front of Jim "T he An imal" Fishback. Jim is one of th e big reasons the track has been sold out for the past two weeks. Mike did win th e Scratch Main event with Fishback running second. All fou r laps, Jim pulled big wheelies com ing out of th e tum and came within a few feet of taking over the lea d. Dave Sims , Ron Preston, Alan Ch rist ian a nd Mike Bast pu t on one hell of a race for second pla ce in th e Ha ndicap Main event while Dennis Siga los rode a steady race in fr ont for the win . Da ve got past Preston in the closing la p for second , Preston took th ird, Christian held off Bast , and Jan Balla rd took sixth. A large number of the fa ns who were tu rned away go t up on top of th eir cars and trucks to see over th e fence. Even with their disappointment , San Bernardino, Ascot and Costa Mesa - all three tracks had but on e name to put in the record books under Scratch Main event winn er . You guessed it! Mike Bast turned in a perfect week taking every Scra tch Main victory . During the riders' sign- up at the back gate, Bob Schwartz and I were rapping about his chances of taking the Main event. His reply was, 'lust call me Bobby Schwartz, the Third!" H e couldn't hav e been more ac curate. Bast got first , Alan Christian second, followed by Schwartz the Third and rounded out by Ron Preston in fourth . Preston had just won the Handicap Main in a great ride, holding off Alan Christian and Mike Bast. Preston is getting to be a regular in the winners' circle; this was his second winning week in a row. Just three weeks ago , Troy Ingolia was carried off the track with what was thought to be a broken hip . This week, he stood tall after winning th e Division Three Main. Division Two honors went to J im Foreh and . This com ing week you get two chances to .see spee d way at Cost a Mesa because of the Orange County "W e're m oving." Those were nearly the first words Santa Ana promoter Louis Kossuth said as fans arri ved at Saturday's races. T he newest So Cal speedway track's schedule switches from Saturday night to Tuesday night beginning July 18. ' Sam e time, same place, but a new night. The idea of a change didn't seem to bother th e riders as once again they put on an exciting performance with "W ild Bill Cody" still king of th e hill in First Division Scratch Mains at Eddie West field. Cody was given a real scare as Ron Rose was hot on his tir e. But on the third lap, the "W ild Man" decided he'd had enough and pulled away to continue his domination of th e Scratch event. Fini shing behind Cody and Rose was John Stasi efski. " Rad ical Randy" Marsh, having problems get ting a good ride at Santa Ana , got it all together as he rode to a spectacular win over Brian Buffington and hard-riding Ron Rose . In the Special Match Event, Cody defeated Marsh in a ra ce that at first seem ed to be Marsh's match, but ended up Cody's race . The Second Division Handicap Main event went to recen tly-prom oted Keith Crisco. Keith seemed to be extra hot this week and is looking for a back yardage ride. If he's not careful he'll get it. Keith defeated " Fast Eddie" Thurman , who was moved back, and twenty-yard line rider Da ve Brewer. In the Second Division Scratch Main , Brian Bishop showed Oklahoma rider Eric Gage that the "Ca liforn ia Kid" does not give up , as the tr io battled it out the ent ire race. Bishop became th e victor , Eric Gage second and finishing a close third was Dan Waller. Ther e was no Third Division main . Shawn McConnel, a crowd favorite , was unable to ride because of a broken arm incu red while attempting th e fin e art of skateboarding. The races were touched with a bit of sen time nt as "old timer" and many time Ascot hero Sam Tanner , the "Flying Flea," returned to speedway racing for an exciting comeback.
