Hoskins. finished second. Gil Martin (TZ750) , a self-sponsored newcomer from San Diego, placed a respectable third . Saturday Saturday's activities were limited. although two finals in the afternoon yielded some good racing. The 125cc GP class is turning into a season -long war. After points leader Fred Winters crashed in turn two , Fred Merkel (Hon) brought his Penero Honda mount across the line first . Jeff Leggitt's Honda MT125R was second. and Greg Goodman , on a South City Honda MTI25R, was third. Merkel's win , combined with W inters' crash and Bill Mullins' fifth place. tightened the current points standings considerably. Less than a dozen points seperare the top four. Richa rd Oliver (650 Kaw) took the Box Stock win in a race that saw Pat Eagan (Honda Hawk) engaged in a spirited dice wit h Francis Mazur (750 H on) for second place. Eagan , on a South Coast Honda entry. finally yielded to the bigger bike a t the checkered . De nnis Dola n (65 0 Kaw) , after running in second place until lap eight, ran off into the dirt in the Carousel and wound up fourth. Sal Avelar and his J.A .M . Addington had previously been pla ced on a year's probation for rough ridi n g at the end of last year's AFM season. Billy (Kaw 1000) later went racing, and promptly took the Open Superstreet lead. with Kerry Bryant (Yoshimura Z-l ) hot on his ta il. Four riders contested th ird place. and the proverbial blanket covered them all . Dennis Smith, on a 840cc Del Amo Suzuki. finally ' pulled it ou t. Favorite Nick T hero ux (SR500 Yam) crashed on the second turn of the 600cc Superstreet race, and Rob Renear (RD 350) led Greg Sachs (550 Hon) for five la ps. Sachs . on a Vanguard Engineering bike, then took the lead on lap six and was never passed. Renear, whose throttle arm ran out of gas, mainrained second place, but faded to fifth on the last lap. Gennady Liubimsky (375 Yam) brought his Hunt Racing mount in for the usual win in 410cc Production , and Gipe/Essoff made it two in a row a t Sears in Sidehack competition. Randy Mamola scored two of his three.victories in the 250cc and 750cc GP final s. G ennady L iub imsky provided t he J im Do yle -sponsored ride r with some exci tement in the early go ing. However . Mamola's expe rie nce with th e t ra ck , in addition to George Vukmanovich's ca refu l tu ning; proved to be th e vita l di fferen ce. Randy led th e 750cc G P at the sta rt , with Pa ul Ritter (903 Du e) a nd Alan Barbie (T Z750) in clo se pursui t. Bar bi e pa ssed Ritter on lap three , a n d th e Aero/ Union -Eu roma rt rid er re t ired two laps lat er with a brok en engine.
