c, i NORTHERN DATRINE ~ Halcomb, Heiberger wail at Watsonville t By Gerry Reagan WATSONVILLE, CA,JUNE4 Charlie Halcomb put it all together and rode to a win in both motos at the R id ge Runners' AMA semi-pro event. . ,. ' ' ~ In this three-crash sequence, the first turn at Watsonville takes its toll on the Open Amateurs. Mike Callaway grabs the holeshot with Bob Bel icitti (66) and Chuck Cochran (425) chasing, but behind Gary Rabe (171) begins taking out riders left and right. Duane Hughes 12481 is caught in the tangle, but after the dust settled, no one was hurt. Belicitti went on to take the overall win for the day, but Callaway was nudged back int o third overall by Maico-mounted John Handelin. 32 Halcomb. riding a 125cc Husky , took the early lead in the first 125cc Expert rnoto and edged away to a secure first place finish . In moto two it was Fred Tun nicliff (Suz) who got the holes hot a nd led the first ha lf of lap one . T hen . out in the back section , Ha lcom b slipped by, followed by Mike Ma rqu ez a nd Larr y W osick , bot h rid ing Yamah as. Marquez stayed wit h Halcom b for a few la ps. waiting for a sli p 10 m ove into t he le a d, bu t Ha lcom b rode flawless ly and bega n to open up a lea d , takin g th e win with ease . T he 250cc Amateur class saw some good dicing in the second rnoto betwee n J ohn Handeli n (Mai) and J oe Headley (Hon) . Handelin took the first rnoto fairly easily. leading from wire to wire while Headl ey finished third. In the'second go around Handelin go t the holeshot and led for the first half lap . Headley got by in the back section and contin ued to hold off the hardcharging Handelin for three la ps. but Handelin got his chance when Headley went wide in a turn and slipped into the lead. The two charged into the back section like they were tied together and it was still Handelin with the lead when , t hey came into sight again . Then. at the same spot where he had taken the lead , Handelin got re -passed by Headley , who took the overall win. It was a good day for Jerome Heiberger. who took overa ll ho nors in both the 250cc a nd Open Expe rt races . Heiberger got a poor start in the first moto of t he Open class , bu t charged through the pack , pic king up one position a la p . until he crossed the finish li ne in second beh ind Jim Turner , who ha d led most of the moto . In the second moto Heiberger (Mai) had to fight off T urner (Yam). who was right on his tail for most of the race. With only two laps to go Turner slid off the track and Heiberger rode alone for t he win. Turner kept going and ended up second . second overall . In the 250cc Expert event Heiberger was on a Honda and had a super dice in both motos with Larry, Wosick (Yam) . Heiberger led most of the first rnoto , but Wosick slipped by near the end to take the win . The second round found Wosick in the lead for most of the race with Heiberger hot on his tail. As the two charged down th e fina l straight toward the last turn , Heiberger found an opening and gassed it , squ eezing by Wosick to take the rnoto and the overall. Mark Mellander (Yam) too k both moros of the 100cc Novice race , winning the first one going away a nd fig hting back to regain the lead on ~ he last la p of t he scco nd , after d ro pping two plac es a la p ear lier. Pe te Wosick (Yam) rook the lead in rhe midd lc of t he first 250cc Novice I moto and held on for the win , but was unable to catch the duo of Kevin II ilderbra nd a nd Irvin A r hz igr-r (lion) , who swapped hack and forth for the Iead on just about every la p . Hilderbrand slipped by on the last straight 10 capture the moto, but Wosick held the overa ll by finishing third. Mark Webb (Suz) slipped into the lead on the last lap of the 125cc Novice I event to lead an overall sweep by local rid ers of the top five positions. Webb was followed in the ove rall standings by Da n Gamez (Yam) . Ken Eggers (Suz), Mark Hamblin (Hus) and Kel ly Mano (Suz) , all Santa Cruz a rea riders. Results OPEN EX: 1. Sa nta Cruz's Curt Wilcox (Suz) con tinued to show potential as he press ured Wosick in both Open rnotos , but he co u ld not find t he needed power to overtake the bike of Wos ick. K.R . Raci ng's Randy Kerslake (Hon) , back after a six -month injuryinduced layoff, reall y loo ked hot, but simply did not have the needed . stamina to go for the win in the combined 125/250cc Pros. Wosick made it look easy as he held off Kerslake and Manzoni (CZ) to grab his i first doub le victory at Fremont. Dav d Woodall rode a consistent and forceful Suzuki to take the 125cc honors.
