But not all the GNC raci ng was a runaway for the on e who grabbed the holeshot . In the Open Experts , battling for part of the $3 ,000 Exp ert purse was anything but ca lm . Da vid Williams put his Maico into the lead on the first lap with Bob Marino and Val Tamiet ti follo wing. As the pack headed dow n th e fron t straight, Marino moved up on Williams, th en slid by in th e tight left-bander at the end of the long freeway. Williams was far from being ou t of th e ra ce and stuck right to Marino's Yamaha. Back In fifth, Mark Brooks slid out after th e tight left and was centerpunched in the ribs. T ha t ended his night qu ickly. C Up front, Marino was having all kinds of trouble with Williams. This duo was soon joined by Tamietti in the closing laps, bu t everyone held at the flag. Shawn Sm ith , Chappy Blose and Mike Tripes led out the U5cc Experts, but all were soon sca tt ered around the track . As Sm ith en tered the Grand Tetons on the second lap, he got out of sha pe and Blose nailed him , then Tripes flew right into the middle of th e tangle. This left Larry Wos ick in the lead , but Pedro Peralos rod e up to and then by Wo sick's Yamaha . T ripes was the first ou t of the tangle, up in sixt h . Mike soon began pi ckin g off slower traffic like his br oth er Marty and mo ved up to th ird by the time the checker ed flag was waved . Sm ith en de d th e finale in seventh , and Blose was knocked into ninth . The last race of the nigh t was the 250cc Exper ts. Texas terror Derek Wedding took th e lead on the front straight befor the first turn and never looked back. Beh ind was a tight battle be tween Larry W osick and Chappy Blose. Blose was in second for the firs t la p until Wosick powered by. These positions hel d , but th e seat of Don Glover 's Can-Am didn't. On the second-to -last lap, Glover's bun cushion fell off, and as Glov er crested the Kawasaki jump wher e he took th e flag , he lost it and fin ished on the dirt . / When asked if he was all right, he replied "Yea , I'm just tired . When m y seat fell off, I smacked myself sci hard, I'll be sore for a week!" After the r aces, Kawasaki's main men, Jimmy "T he Jammer" Weinert and Bryon Farnsworth helped present tro phies to all the winners : and cash to the Pros . When Burnworth made all of his appearances, Weinert and Farnswor th were alread y hinting to the kid tha t they ha ve a fact ory rid e ava ilable for some little sq uirt who literally flies. • OPEN EX: 1.
