Rand y ' T o m p k in s had th e Hanford Fairgrounds Speedway track dialed in Friday night. Tompkins , after turning in favorable performanc es in th e Handicap heats and sem i, cruised to th e Handicap Main win . Tompkins came from th e 20 -yardline to lead th e event flag to flag over Frankie Adamo, who cam e from the 30·yard handicap mark. T hird was Mike Bloom . Gr ant Salyers was ba ck in the winner 's circle this week b y taking th e Scratch Main. Salyers led flag to flag to a co m fo rt a b le win over Max Koem ans and Frankie Adamo . Adamo, for the second week in a row, won th e " King of the Hill " match race over Max Koem ans . T his tim e ho wever, the match ra ce was the best two ou t of t hree with Koemans taking the opener a nd Adamo t he remaining two . Res ults HANDICAP MAIN: 1. Randy Tompk ins; 2. Frankie Adamo ; 3. Frankie Adamo took t he King Of Th e Hill match race at Hanf ord. .. 42 The season started off well for last year's number on e 125cc Expert , Scott Davi s. He caught the checkered first in a ll three motes during both days of racing to receive two overall victories in the 125cc Expert class . Davis continued to show his talent in the 250 cc Expert class , although this time the competition was a bit tougher . On Sunday, the first moto of the 250cc Experts bega n with Kevin Goard, last year's number one 250cc Expert , ca tchi ng th e holeshot on his Kawasak i. Goa rd kept the lea d to tlie finis h wit h Davis not fa r behind. The second moto, Goard again ca ught the ho leshot. Wayne Broste (Yarn) dueled with Davis for . second until Davi s ate the di rt at the halfway mark. Broste went on to battle for first and on the last lap passed Go ard to take th e checkered. Mark Carr led th e third moro with Davi s a nd Brost e agai n ba tt lin g for secon d . This tim e it was Broste who ate th e dirt and Davis went on to tak e over Carr. Davis led for th e rem ainder of the race. Davis rec eived the overall victory in the 250c c Expert class on Sunday. . Monday it was aga in Goard , Broste and Davis battling it out in the first moto of the 250cc Experts. They ran close up to the finish . Kevin Goard finished first with Scott Davis second nd Wayne Brosre third . In the second moto Davis caught the holeshot a nd went on to win . Chris Pa tt er son (Mai) kept second covered unti l Goard passed him to fin ish second with Carr th ird . Brosre led the third and last moto with Davis looking for some lines to get pa st him. Goard , on his green machine , attempted to ca tc h Davi s. The last moto ended wit h Brost e , Davi s and Goard . Davis sco red first overall for another 250cc Exp ert win . J UNE I I Thirty-nine teams on street legal machines lined up under cloudy skies for the start of the Washington Motorcycle Road racing Associ a tio n' s Fourth Annual Dealer's Challen ge Marathon . When the flag fell six hours later on the rem aining 22 bikes. winners Randy Skiver and Rog er Sta n ley had completed 202 laps (455 mi les) on the Hond a CX -500 sponsored by Burien Hond a . Skiver/S tanley were leadi ng on lap 180 wh en , a fter starting a lap la te , the Yoshimura Racing Services/Cycle Gui d e Magazine . team of Art Friedman and Jeff Karr on a Suzuki GS 550 ca ught and passed them to ta ke firs t , only to lose a transmission on t ha t same lap . When frantic sh ifti ng attem pts by foot and hand proved useless, they lim ped in to the pits a nd 30 mi nutes lat er pu shed the GS across th e lin e for the checkered flag , taking 13th overall. Second overall with six fast pit stops and first in th e Open Ca fe class were Rocky Ph oenix and Dave Wilson on a Kawasaki Z650 sponsored by Greenl ake Kawasaki . One lap behind came the third and fourth place finishers. Rose Cit y BMW's team of Tom Young and Keith Pinkstaff took their BMW 1000 across the line on ly 56 seconds ahead of th e Yamaha 1100 XS· II ridden by Bruce Lind , Paul Peirol i and Ken Botham. The only XS -II entered , th e Renton Yamaha team was running first whe n a worn ou t rear tire for ced th em in for a six minute pit stop on lap 120 . Kawasaki was th e only brand to cro wd two machines into th e top five overa ll as fifth place finishers Gordie Vanskike, Ga ry Gallager and Tom Hubbard brought their Greenlake Kaw asaki -sponsored 400 across the linc one la p later with 449 mi les under their wheels, and second in the 550 Cafe class behind the win ners Skiver/ Stanley. In th e other two classes , Open Product ion was won by John Hartman a nd Claude Hislop (Kent , W A) , who a lso won sixt h overa ll on th e Suzuki GSI OOO from Federal Way Suzuki . First place in the 410cc Pro d uction class a nd eighth overa ll went to Mike Ma yes and Gu s Den sler , who raced a Hon d a 400 Haw k spo nsored by Seattle Honda . This a nnua l race was previously a five hou r event a nd t he WMRRA was pleased with the turnout a nd safe, fa st rac ing for this yea r's exte nded six hour ra ce. All the tea ms were mapping their stra tegy for next year as they took their mon ey from th is yea r's $ 1200 purse. Next yea r's race is expected to be bigger and better ! Pat Jacob son is one. In th e 125cc Pros he showed a lot of exci tement , for a whil e. J im Anderson (Suz) , Cla y Azar (Yam) and Pat led th e first rnot o . Pat soon got by Clay a nd headed for Jim . In the th ird lap Pat took th e lead as th e three left th e pack a good dis ta nce behind . Pat's lead was sho rt- lived th ough. Both J im and Cla y repassed him in th e fifth lap as he came wobbling by on a flat rear tire. Bri an H all (Suz) a lso passed him . but Pat gassed ba ck by in th e final lap . Who else could keep a fla t tire on th e rim for over six laps? Clay took the lead at the halfway mark . The next moro started with the same three, but Clay was in front. Pat put th e move on Jim to ta ke second in the th ird la p . He even got in fro nt aga in ' in th e seve nt h lap . Then his sprocket went . C lay regai ned the lea d and held it. Pat rode the 250cc class to m ake it twice as int eresting. T he first la p was led by T im Michl itsch (Yam) , Barn ey Newman (Mo n) , Dave Eakin (H on), Les Wom ack (Yam) and Montev Mitchell (Mai) . J acobson (Suz) was th e last number on the sheet.
