IMGI. t 00 t"O') ~ £1 Capitan wins SAM HsMX Championship By Tom Corley ORANGE, CA , JUNE II This year's Scholastic Association of Motosport high school motocross season got off to a rough start with a couple of the races being delayed because of the rain . Things started to roll in style once the weather improved and then the promoters moved the program over to join the Saddleback Promotions race on Sundays and on th e same track . This season had its rough points but things turned out just right. This was seen today in the final race of the series and the SAM High School Motocross Championships. W ith 16 differ ent cla sses firing off th roughou t the day it was th e largest race yet as well as th e best . They had two divisio ns of 125cc Jun ior classes and t he n t ransfer red the top five winners to a specia l final. So there were 10 of the best in this final. As it turned ou t EI Capitan High Sch ool too k t he top honors a nd n u m ber one m an Tracy McMill en smoked everyon e in his division and proved to be th e fin est 125ccJunior in SAM HSMX as he d id it aga in in th e final. Gene Anderson , also from EI Capitan walked awa y with the second place gold. McMillan also smoked the 500cc Juniors. According to ND service department spokesman Scott Yamada , "ND provided $2000 for the series ; $500 per race ($250 for the first place, then $150 for second and $100 for third) and we were very pleased with the results." Yamada told a reporter that it is likely that ND will sponsor more AFM races next year with a larger purse. "T he riders liked it , we gave sp a r k plugs but especially advice," commented Yamada. The sponsorship was for four classes : 410cc' Production, 250cc and Open GP , and Superstreet. The winners in t he different classes a re : 410cc Production: I . tie between Allan Gingerelli and Gennady Lu ibimsk y, 3. Dale Alexander ; 250cc GP: 1. Da ve Garoutte, 2. Gennady Luibimsky, 3. tie between AI Collins and Mike Baeder ; Open GP : I . R ichard . Seifried, 2. Syd DeSoto, 3. Wes Cooley ; Superstreet: 1. Kerry Bryant, 2. Chuck Panne, 3. Syd DeSoto. During the morning practice, we noticed a surprise entry: Rand y Mamola . He was not racing at the Loudon National and when asked why, Mamola's manager-sponsor Jim Doyle said, "T he bikes are not ready. We used to have Erv Kanemoto (Gary Nixon's tuner) as a mechanic, but he couldn't travel all the time with us, and Ra nd y is racing in Europe now in GP and International events. That 's why we hired George, bu t d id n't have enough time to prepare the machines for the Loudon race." Randy is ~ing [0 . race at the Mugello track in It aly on July 9 during an Int ern a tional event , before returning to the USA where he is' going to compete in the Sears Point National Road Race on July 15-16. For the 250cc GP race Mamola was the favorite , but it took him one lap' to capture the lead over Gennady Lu ibimsky and Darrel Lee . Mamola passed them in turn 12 and started stretch ing his command ing lead. Lee was a solid .second bu t Lu ib imsky dropped to fou rth . passed b y AI Colli ns. They rem ained in tha t order: Marnola , Lee , Colli ns an d Luibimsky for eight of th e 10 la ps. T hen beh ind Mamola and Lee , Lu ibimsky pa ssed AI Collins to ta ke third place. After his victo ry , Mam ola was asked about th e race. " I went off th e track during the first lap between turns eight and nine, and was passed by Lee and Luibirnsky. After I repassed them I d idn't have any problems," said Mamola. The 550cc l750cc/Open Production race was one of the most interesting of the day . Mike Velasco (She lb y Thompson GSIOOO Suz) lead Whitney Blakesl ee (Champion Kaw). Vance Breese (850 Moto-Guzzi Le Mans Euromart) and Lee Fleming (900 Ducati ). By lap five, Breese had passed Flemming and Blakeslee and was closing on Velasco. He finally outrode. th e Suzuki-mounted rider in turn 12 and then went to a splendid victory. After that race, AFM officials checked the bikes which participated, and found 12 illegal ones which were d isqual ified. Breese reta ined h is vic to ry, but Mike Velasco was disqualified and the second place went to Blakeslee and third to Flemming. Willi Scheffer (750 Suz) took the 750cc class and John Buddenbaum (500 BSA) the 500cc class . One of the usual participants of that class, Chuck Parme , fell off during morning practice and went to the hospital for the day. Resu lts MINI JR 2·STROKE: 1. Barney Frank, Saddleba ck • ISuzl: 2.
