lead while Montey was working up to third . Just after the halfw ay sign was given Newman slowed to a stop on the downhill. A stuck throttle left him with the de cision to qu it o r play Roger DeCoster. By this time J ac obso n was up to sixth and still climbing . On th e ninth lap he moved into third but was too far out of reach of Montey and Tim . In the second moto Pat didn't even leave the line with the rest of them . When asked why, he replied " Ask my sister. " This time Troy Folc k (Hus) won fo llowed by Mi tchell , Michlitsch a nd Jacobson had come all the way through the pack again to pi ck up fourth . Montey's 2-2 edged Tim's 1-3 for the overall. Attrition played a ro le in the Open Pro class. It st arted out great when Montey Mit chell, Tim Michlitsch, Clay Azar and Ba r ney Newman rode out front in a wheel -to-wheel contest for several laps . Newman slid out, letting the other three get away . Tim took the lead and Clay moved to second , then Montey's Maico started to sour. Newman went by him . When round two came around , Montey di d n't show, nor did Clay. Clay retired one la p into the second 250cc rnoto with completely rearranged innards due to riding without a kidney belt . Sun doesn't shine .at Rose Festival MX By Jan Newman PORT LAN D , O R , J UN E 8 Por tlan d's Rose Festival is a weeklong celebration featuring something for everyone. Events run fro m parades to pow-wos, carni vals to coronation, art to acid roc k and sporting events for every taste . Even motocross has fo und an offic ia l niche in the scheme of things in re ce nt yea rs. This year's official Del ta Park Ros e Festival MX held 1000 luring greenbacks for th e few lucky Pros who shared in it. Spicing the lineup of local heroes was th e name of Chu ck Sun , who had a few days leeway before proceeding to the next 250cc National for H usqvarna . He found tha t even though Delta Park has undergone considerab le changes this yea r . you still have a to ugh time working through th e pack if you ha ppen to wind u p behind in the first turn . Chuck tu cked right in be hind Les W omack (Ya m) in th e first 250 cc Pro rno to . On the second la p both Chuck and Montey Mit chell (Mai ) went by. Les held th ir d u ntil the final lap when he was za p ped by both Pat Jacobson (Suz) and Ti m Michl itsch (Yam ). In the second race Mitchell and W om ack led off. Reid Godlmann (Hon) a nd Jacobson ca m e next , but they cam e together in th e seco nd la p .and both wound up at th e ba ck of th e pa ck . Barney ' Newman (Mon) , Michlitsc h, Darrold Ba ker (Hon) and Sun came a long to start pressuring Womack. Mitchell was out of rea ch , but one by on e Newman , Michlitsch and Sun all got by Womack. Pat Jacobson and Bill Joyce led a 'Zookie parade in the 125cc Pro ra ces. They finished 1·2 both times . J im Anderson rode third all the wa y in th e first ra ce then had to scratch and gnaw his way up to a fou rth in the second. Richa rd Earle (Suz) led the Open Pros but Montey Mitchell (M ai ) took ove r on the second la p . Tim Michlitsch ha d other id eas which he achieved at mid-point. Montey then had C la y Azar to co ntend with. Clay got him in the fina l tu rn . ' In th e fina l round Montey held Tim off th e whole wa y. C lay pu lled ou t a DNF. A $50 cha llenge race ran th ree laps backwards , sparked th e cro wd . As J a cobson . Sun, Mich litsch a nd Joyce hit th e fir st sharp left turn Jacobson went down . On the wa y he clipped Sun just enough to put him last in th e parade. Joyce led until he buried hims elf in the next left tu rn about halfway through the first lap . With ease Larson got it together. to ok over the lead and set a zoomi ng pa ce . The ac tio n behind Phil was taken over by a Thornton teammate , Mik e Anderson (Good Times Kaw ) a nd he blew th e rest into th e everg ree n trees. T . and several others st art fr om a secon d row penalty line . Tavis returned from the come-from behind heat win to tak e th e m a in easily over Brian O 'Hagan and Duane Spence. Richard Amaiz inherited the 250cc Expert lead from Kim J o rgensen . who lost his brakes, and Ri chard continued for th e win on his new Bultaco. Dennis Kri tzer brought ba ck the K ise r Bro thers Honda a nd picked up the 360 cc main over Jim Mahoney and returned two races la ter to chase Dan Castelhano in the 500cc. Dan's win here and the King win plus a third in the 250cc made him big money win ner for the night. Freddie Merkel and Mike Lawson led th e jorgy's Can-Am swee p of the 250cc Sportsman classes in o utstanding rides for both . Merkel topped th e Jun iors . t he evening's la rgest class, while Mike grabbed first in the Novice ranks . C heuk Aksland ripped off h is second 125cc Novice main in a row over former Mini BP # eight Joe Brazil. Joe followed to take his first win in the 500cc Novice class.
