Pacific Ave., Sen Pedro, CA The first 125cc mota saw McDonald (Yam), Andy James (Suz), Kelly Donen (Yam) and Stan Morton (Yam) rocket into the lead around the first turn and held positions into the third lap . McDonald slid out on a slick turn and James moved into the lead. Back in sixth place now , McDonald started moving up . passing Valkenaar, Yamamoto , Morton and Konen in the next lap . By lap five he regained the lead from James and held on the next two laps for the win . Steve Valkenaar (Yam) moved past Morton to finish third behind James. The second moro found McDonald. James and Konen out in front and their positions remained unchanged for the race. The bigger battle went on behind. Steve Valkenaar, ninth at the end of the second lap , started picking off bikes. finishing fourth ahead of a hard-charging Shane Blood (Suz). The 250ccA class was another hair raiser with Rick Gage (Hon), Dan Ballard (Hen), Leon McDonald (Yam) and Don Smith (Hon) leading the race around the first tum. By lap two McDonald passed Ballard and took off after Gage , while back in the pack Harvey Craft started to move up . For a while it looked like McDonald might be able to reel in Gage, but a fall on a" wide turn lost · va lu ab le time . McDonald finished second while Craft moved up to third ahead of Tim Fleener (Mai). They went bashing around the first turn in the second moto, with Ballard, Smith. McDonald and Craft leading the way. McDonald soon moved into first and Gage , from sixth place at the end of lap one, moved into second and the chase was on. Ballard had problems in the second lap and retired. Don Smith. followed by Doug Blevins. rounded out the first four places by races end. Overall standings were McDonald. Gage and Craft. . Open riders saw a I. 2, 3, order of Don Lentz (YarnjDale Greene (Bul) and Robin Thorton (Yam). followed by battles among Kevin Thurlow (Bul) , Pat" Gunter (Yam) and Dan Sheldon. This was the finishing order in the first mota. The second moto gave the local fans a chance ~o yell when Dale Greene
