MAY 14 Flat-track officials set up a roug h scrambles event Sunday at the O .C.A. track in Ogden and challenged all motocrossers to co me a nd joi n the fu n . T hey fu rt her inspi red co m petition whe n th ey stuc k the 'crossers with the lab el of "old lady riders". That clench ed some thro ttle fingersl The track was designed to appeal to com bi ned flat -track fantasy and m ot ocross mad ness and a slop ing hill was thrown in for good m easure. Scott J ohnson (Suz) began the Mini No vice battle with a holeshot and dusted the pack, stop p ing j ust long enough to discuss maneuvers with Mark McDonald (Yam). Mc Donald ran away with the ba ttle plans d uring the next two heats and won the high st a kes, while Johnson slid in for second. Mini Experts clustered on the line, the flag dropped and Snell Johnson (Suz) set his throttle to WFO. He chalked up a first with Brad Frampton (Yam ) settling into second. Stormin' Steve Taggart (Yam ) and Jammin Jim East (H on) formed a deadly duo in the 250cc Expert class as they jockied for front position. The trackers dropped back to scope ou t th e action and th e skirmish became pretty int ense. Stormin St eve wh irled past th e ch ecks with the win ning points in sp it of Jammin Jim 's attempt to fracture his lead in a corner. Jim low-sid ed in that cla sh , but managed to keep his position for second . Bla sting off of the line with th e hol eshot , Terry Abernethy (Mai) put a ll sane thoughts to bed a nd woke up th e hot lin e in the Open Novices. U nfo rt u n a tely , a c ra cked el b o w cramped his style and Gene KoFord (Ya m ) swoo ped the lead and streaked off to th e win . Abernethy fin ished second . Rich Gillett (Yam) cut a new lin e for the Open Amateurs, but a bit of bad lu ck squashed his 1·1 fini shes and dropped him into se co n d , W yn Forshee (Ya m) he ld the steady points and captured th e win . The 250cc Ama teurs got it all together on the start , b ut Kelly Dickerman (Ya m ) shot the troops with a wall of dust. Ken Ulib arri (Suz) sw a r me d throug h . t he · cloud to challenge Dickerman, but couldn't ove rtake Dickerman. The top prize went to Dickerman and Uli b a rri smashed second. The 'crossers completely controlled th e scr a m bl es , as " R a d ica l Ron " Sch aefer (Yam) creamed th e trackers when he smashed th e Open Expert class. His radical , but sm ooth riding put ya rdage on the pack. Kevin Murph y ( Ya m) mad e a ga lla nt attem p t to sn ag th e flying foe, but was forced to cool it to keep h is spot from a n atta ck ing Bob Powell (Ya m). Pow el l's persevera n ce a lmost ca me t hrough wit h a second. b ut Mu rphy d ia led his machin e and held it to the wire.
