Yamaha's Rickey Burgett couldn't put it together at Mt. by Clay Azar. Clay creams Mt. ViewMX By Jan Newman SANDY, OR, MAY 7 Clay Azar proved tha t factory riders can be beaten if you hang in there . O n his Ray Ga rn er Yamaha , Clay too k top honors in ..36 both 250cc and Open Pro classes from Rick Burgett. Clay th rew in the 125cc win to make it a clean sweep for the day. A broken sidecase sidelined Burgett in Open motos, after he had the first win in his pocket again when the break occurred. Clay was hot on his tail and went on for the win . Azar led the first lap of the opening 250cc moto, but R ick found a hole to squeeze through and led to the wire. Azar nipped at his heels as they lapped all but Clay's big brother , Marv, in third place. Ron Dimeo (Suz), Azar and Burgett led the first lap on round two . Just past the finish line , Burgett unceremoniously dumped it while everyone went by . Clay took the lead in the next lap while Rick plowed his way through the pack. At the halfway mark there was nothing between Burgett and Azar but a lot of space. Rick was chewing away at Clay's lead at the ra te of five seconds per lap. As it turned out , going fast wasn't his problem. stopping was. Just as he seemed within striking distance, he dove into a berm with no hope of slowing without the front brake, which had been defunct since the first-la p crash. Even wit h the tri p over the bars he had enough time to remount in second , b ut Azar was unt ou ch a ble. Mark Moore (Hon) was just beginning to look like a winner in the 250cc Intermed iate when he overshot a corner.and wound up downhill in the bushes. By the tim e he rounded up enough help to get his steed back on the track, he was more than a lap down. Lonnie Musick (Suz) dropped VI8W and got beat from second to seventh at the same' time . Lonnie came back to lead wireto-wire on the second round for fourth overall. Ron Long (KTM) added up a first and second to win it while a fourth and ' third p ut Dennis Hucke (Yamj in second. Steve Love (Yam) led a mix-up of 125cc Juniors with a 3-2 record . Moto winners seemed doomed to on ly one good ride . Jerry Eversaul's 5-1 added up to second ahead of Mark Wi ley's 1· 6 third. An easy water crossing was negotiated atthe Foo l's Gold Enduro. accomplished without the aid of a computer! Jeff Henning (Hus) took second overall with a loss of 1.45 over the 85 ·mile course and Rob Sutliff came in third with 1.69 . riding an IT 400 . Wiser 250cc rider Dale Warmuth was the top B rider with a score of seven minutes, followed by Andy Horuath (Hon 250) with 8.198 and Bob Wraub le (Hus 360) , who finished down 8 .227. C rider Chuck Beatie (Hus) was tops in his class with II points and another big -bore rid er , Jim Irving (Suz) came in a t 12. KTM pilot J im Sm ith got third in the best of Beg in ne rs with 13 points. Some 4l!0 competitors began the rugged , well planned , skill -resting route and 70% received finisher pins. In the C class about 60% of the riders finished· the ru n . One of the first things a rider noticed early was that there were plenty of tight trails right from the start , but that there were no bottlenecks to suffer through , due in great part to the thorough, wellthought layout and preparation of CERA, and every check was right on. George Madaris earned the 250cc Intermediate first spot the hard way . He led the first race all the way, then a bad start in the second race left him scrambling through the pack. With Eric Schumacher (Suz) breathing down his neck, Madaris finished on foot , pushing for all he was worth. When it was over he wasn 't worth m uch, but he had won . David Juba pulled out the 125cc Intermediate win , fighting Scott Nisbett and Denny Reyn olds for it. The three Suzukis took the top three spots. Ron Dim eo (Suz) led the firs t 250cc Pro moto while Ba rney Newman (Mon), Kevin Jansen (H on) and T im Michlitsch (Yam) looked like a sixwheeled vehicle . Dim eo dropped out with a mechanical malfunction on the second lap and the six -wheeler co nti nued on . Tim moved to the middle and decided in a tight section just past the finish line he wanted to be in front. He moved up beside Newman in a one bikewidth space and soon found himself intimately acquainted with a course marker and the ground . In the second it took Newman to regain his momentum , Jansen was by for the lead. Clay Azar was hot in the other two Pro classes.
