CA , APR. 21 Young Doug Chandler doubled his way through the Minibike competition while Mike Faria repeated his win of the Open Ex- 34 • pert dass and Wes Morrell made virtual mincemeat of the 250cc Expert competition at Sand Hill racing Friday. Mike Faria and Denny Spence hooked it up much the same way as last week in the Open Expert main with Jim Hartbauer doing his best to keep up in front of the kids , which he did for a few la ps. Phil Anderson stepped off again with some twisting while Kirk King and Jim Filice diced at the back with Dallas Davis in and out. W ith Gary Johnson off for a school dance, th e Open Junior was open and just what Rick Almeida needed for a Skip Aksland and his KR Racing monoshock Yamaha combined to top the second Pro short track of the season at Oakdale. The P]-l , Dad Aksland Racing team was resplendent after defeating Alex Jorgensen with Jim Mertens in for third. A very cloudy, windy. cool day greeted the 46 racers and the weather kept any sort of a crowd awa y. but the Jerry Griffith -prepared track was excellent and the riders pu t on a · tremendous show. Rick Hocking dialed his night fabrication Yamaha right int o the fast time, just a nick over Rick Graham , who hit th e dirt three times the night before. Novice Rod Sullivan tripped in the third fastest over Rusty Davis. while Mike Inderbitzen lined up on th e pole for th e fifth heat and Skipper the sam e on th e sixt h. W ith drips of rain . som e su n and then more clouds. it was a fast rac e program. Hocking had his hands full from the first green when he hooked up with Jeff Haney. Jeff led the first three la ps and then a real battle royale ensu ed around th e two until Jeff drop ped it in Skip Aksland put t he move on Mike Inderbitzen (18) and A lex Jorgensen (441 at Oakdale. turn three and remounted to finish eighth. Lowell Moural took the second spot behind the fast-departing Hocking. with Kim Jorgensen in for third and enough poin ts to become a Junior under the new rules . if he wants . Rick Graham put the pass on Dave Ryan to win the second heat while Ken Robicheaux took the third over Sullivan and Exp ert Dan Houge. Craig Scorggins won the fouth on the Zakarian Bultaco over John Burnett and Rusty Davis , while Alex Jorgensen did his usual pass on Jim Mertens to win the fifth . Brian Thompson wrapped up the heats . winning over Skipper. Just the first two came out of the four semis. plus the third from the two fastest heats. The first semi didn't have ' a time when it was stopped half way with Mike Inderbitzen and Craig Scorggins trading shoulders down the front straight and into the infield. in a pile that left starter stuff and bikes flying . The restart went back to Aksland with Jorgy following over Rus ty Davis . Rick Graham won the second semi easily over the speedy Novice Sullivan. with Kim J orgensen becoming the first lucky fellow from third to th e main in th e fast est semi . Jim Mertens mad believers out of the third semi with the second fastest clocking over Brian Thompson , bringing along Novic e John Burnett for the main. Lowell Moural passed Dave Ryan laps from the end of the fourth semi for that win and that was th e 10 men for the main . Graham was last to the line. possibly indicating a psyche job and a quick start, but it was a mite too quick as Rick looked across the front row just when starter J erry Kennedy gave the indication to go for .the gear. When the light went green Rick couldn't find a gear to save his soul. Rod Sullivan and Skipper came off the first corner going for it , with Skipper getting the good line a nd leading every lap of the 20 turns. Mertens ran in third over Moural and Burnett with J orgy sa ndwich ed in and passing: Mertens put the pass on Sullivan at lap four with Moural moving by a lso and th en Alex got th e young kid next time a rou nd . ' This parade con tinued for five laps until Alex pr essur ed the rookie Mertens in to a litt le mistake and Moural went ou t with a seizure and Brian Thompson moved up to fourth wit h Da ve Ryan a nd Kim Jorgen sen. As th e white flew. it looked like a repeat of the first Pro ra ce when Alex moved in on Rod Spencer and tried to pass at the checkered, but it fell about 15 feet short. Resu lts MAIN: 1.
