MAY 7 Visiting riders Chris Morey of Huntington Beach and Eddie Glover of West Covina starred in 30 Ca lifornia Min i Mo to rc ycle Club 's motocross program a t Barona Oaks by capturing the Stock a nd Mod ified Ex pert Min i classes in th at order. Ronn ie Lechien saved th e day for the locals with a win in th e 105cc Minis and t he In termedia te 9· 11 St oc k Minis. In th e 105s he topped SCOll Swift (a career high for both riders) and in the Stoc k Minis he downed visitor La rry Br ooks of Alhambra . H owever , Brooks came back wit h a strong win over Lechien in the Modified d ivision . Laps two a nd four were timed in all classes Sunday wit h Eddie Glover ta king Mi ni top time at I mi nute, 32 .2 seco nds . In t he Intermedia te Mini 12-1 6 classes . Scott Swift beat out buddy Scott Brown for the Modified class with Bro wn coming bac k for a Stock win . Both Brown and Swift were timed a I ;38 .8 (in d iffe rent motos) for top Interm edia te Mini time of the day . . M ark H owell co ntin ued hi s domina tion of the 12-16 classes with wins in bo th the Stock and Modi fied classes and established th e top Nov ice tim e of th e d ay with a I :40.8 . Howell was particularly int erested in his times as he will be moving to t h e Intermediate class next race, a nd had hoped to top the times of Swift and Brown . Lack of competit ion however was his undoing as he always h as suc h a big lead that it was difficult to go "a ll ou t. East West thanks a ll parti cipants , especially Goat Breker who taped a Norstar boot over th e cas t on his foot th en limped toward his Husky for the LeMa ns sta rt of the Open race. Mark Asbu ry. fro m Up -Tire Husky, grabbed the lead with Mor gan Malocco a nd Skip W ade right be hi nd him . By th e secon d la p . Breker , who had a very bad start , ha d moved into thi rd and was closing on Malocc o , When Ma locco's machine went sour . Br eker moved int o seco nd pa ce , 20 seco nds behind Asb ury. The sixt h of the eight -m in u te laps was th e white flag lap a nd Asbury became cocky with the su re ness of his win . He d id wheelies for th e specta tors, clowned th rou gh the m ud ho le a nd was st u nned when Breker whizzed p ast him just in ch es before th e chec ke red flag . Breker , who is a member of th e Sled Riders M.C. . commented "Asbury d idn't see me com ing and I got him befor e he kn ew wha t happened . I sti ll can't bel ieve it - but it's grea t. " The Senior race found T he Hawa iia n , Bill Pa ttison , out front with Lyn n McGraw , Charlie Conway and Dick Smallwood battling for second. T he Mini race produced a showi ng of fast new talent on fast new machines . While winner Kevin Senn d iced with Rollin Busse for th e lead , a strong battle was going on behi nd them. "T he Ra t ," Kell y Moore , was stu bbornly refusing to gi ve an inch fro m the th ird spot he was defending from Mike Schuringa and Keith Senn, Meanwhile . back in the pack , a Begi n ner was working his new Mono toward the front . It was Ritchie Sui to r . making his first appearance at an SR A GP who rode with a style and su re ness of a future Pr o .
