• ._._._._._._._._._._._._._._~._._._._. three riders went down in a blaze of glory, but they all got up and back into the race. As the final seconds of the first lap came to a close, "Flyin" Id a Dickinson (SUI ), atop a RM 100 , came flying down the straight throttle wide open . The only problem was , "Flyin" Ida failed to negotiate the turn and did the most fantastic Flying W ove r the berm. Though shaken up , Id a wasn 't seriously injured. After a successful re- start , it was anyone's race. Darlene Dob bs (Ya m) got off the line first with Bec ky Glover (SUI ) and Sharon Marothy (SUI) right be hind . Marothy made her move on both Dob bs and Glover, putting her in first. Glover was right at Marothy's back door and tryi ng t he only two moves she knew - either take the outside or ins ide line , a nd u nsuccessfu l at both , decided to stay where she was a nd settle for seco nd place. Sh aron Ma rothy too k the overa ll win a nd Darlene Do bbs finished in the third place spot. Without a scorecard, it was difficult to tell who the first p lace rider was in the Open 105cc class . As the gate dropped on the first moto, Rick J ackson (SUI) took th e holeshot. Eri c Co llins (Yam ) was right a t jackson's back tire and Eddie Glover (SUI) was running third , Int o the first sweeping turn Jackson and Collins were handlebar to handlebar, but it was Collins who came out of the turn first. Halfway through the first lap Collins went down in a cloud of dust , putting Jackson back into the lead. but not for long as Glover really started pouring it on . By the end of the third lap Glover was in the lead and Jackson in second. Ru nning in third was Richard Sands (SUI) with Alex Atencio (SUI) right on his tail. Co llins, a bit shaken but back up , had made his way up to fift h . It was still Glover stretchi ng out his lead over Jackson as the white flag flew , but back in third place , d isaster struck for Sa nds as he threw a chain , knocking hi m out of contention. T he second moto proved to be a complete turnabou t as Eddie Glover go t off the lin e first with Eric Collins brea thing dow n his neck . Glover m anaged to hold Collins off by pulling him on the up hills, but Coll ins wou ld gain ground in the turns . Jackson , runn ing th ird , had no chance to catch Glover or Collins . As the checkered flag came out , it was Glover over Collins by a bike length. Glover took the overall win with back to back wins . Jackson finished second with a 2-3 score and Collins had to settle for third overall with a 4·2 score. Results PEE WEE: 1. Anhu>' Carillo ISuzl; 2. Robert Yorba !Suzl; 3. T o> Reilly ISuzl. THE SUlITCH IS onl Hackman heroic at CRC Mother's Day motomeet By Keith Clemons TRABUCO CANYON , CA . MAY 14 California Racing Clu b's Mother's Da y Motocross at Ra cing World gave a field full of every mother's so ns a chance to prove to mom Inll-Foa BoaallS that her ump-te en years of in vestments were finally paying off; , that her suc kling baby boy had truly grown u p to be somebody, a mot oman , a motopro, a mot osta r . Film actor Gene Hackman showed up ' bu t it was his son , Chris' , su per b performance in the "W renc h Connection" that received rave reviews . Starting last in t he first moto for the Open Pros he had to wrangle his way around 17 would-be winners to cop the lead and take th e race. Not too bad considering it was his first time acting as an O pen Pr o ; enough to make his mother proud. Dennis Gilmore fini shed second , mu ch to h is surprise, because his mechanic, J im thinking he held a Roggero , com forta b le lead , cued him to slow down a nd take it easy . Gilmore thought the race was his when Hackman, who Gilmore mistook for a lapped rider, received the ch eckered flag. The next time around Gilmore snagged a flat and didn't fin ish. It just wasn 't his day. Bushwha cker's Ken Eh lers finished the first moto in third . In the number two rnoto for th e Open Pros, Hackman hacked 'em again , though he might have done a better job if his ha nd lebars hadn't come loose and raised themselves up hig her th an he liked . Still , he m astered the moto and took the overall with a clean swee p . Andy Bola nd er held the n umber one spot for most of th e race but Hackman passed hi m in the eig ht h la p and Bol a nd er finis hed second followed by Ron Utaski. Utaski took the overa ll second and third for the day went to Ken Ehlers. Having a fa mo us movie star father is great when you 're winging your way ' arou nd Beverly Hills b u t it doesn't cut slac k when you 're down in the dirt. Fortunately Ch ris Hackman proved to be his own man . After giving the Open Pros a lesson in the art of motocross , he went on to demonstrate his skill to the 125cc boys as well. When the gate fell for the first race Joh n Oswa ld led off the line followed by Mike Johns but Johns jumped Oswald in the first la p and took it over . Hackman started next to last only to have his front brake comeapaTt in his hand but the handicap didn't stop his spea rhea d rus h to t he front. Yamaha Motor Corp .'s A .J. Whiting started good but wheelied a nd had to cut power to set it down so he ended up last behind Hackm a n . Hackman and Whiting spent most of the race stealing through the traffic . When they finally caught up to front ru nning Mike J ohns, Hackm a n pulled a sneak pass b ut Whiti ng co uld n 't get by a nd going into th e last turn of th e co urse it looked like it was going to be Hackma n , J oh ns, a nd Whitin g . T hen , as luck would h ave it, on the last corner before the flag , H ackm a n 's shifter go t bent int o his case and while he was down in rep a ir J ohns and Whiti ng flashed by ta king first and second. Hackman hand shifted his bike to finish third and rolled across with no sh ifte r or , front brake.
