By the time he got started he was another 200 yards behind Jennings. By the en d of the thi rd lap they had caugh t and passed everyone except Olson, who was long gone. The long back straightaway had a series of three wheel -b reaking jumps and it was here that Blackie chose to make his move on Jennings. As the two Maico riders hit the third jump . screwed on in fifth gear , Blackie went flying past, b ut when he landed he hit a chuck hole that jarred his right leg clear up in the air and twisted his body around so his right reg came down on the left side of the bike. So help me God, he completed the pass riding sidesaddle and ga in ing speed . Apparently Blackie figured that if he could survive a stunt like that. nothing bad could happen to him and he went on to finish the mo to with one of the fastest rides I've seen him make . He ga ined a lot of ground on Olson bu t had to settle for second place. In the meantime , Dave McCoy worked his . way past Jennings for th ird. The second moro was almost anticlimatic , with Olson out and away by himself. Lewis and Jennings wer.. spread out in second and third and that's the way the fin ished. The. Experts were off in the first moto and it was Sam Jones leading every lap. He steadily pulled awa y from Ken Cla yton , Don Rake and " Little" Norm Elledge who made a very respectable ride on a 125 Suzuki. The second rnoto was not so easy for Sam Jones . He got a bad start and had to work his way up from eighth place. Norm Elledge was using all six gears to keep his 125 in the lead for three laps while d icing with Chuck Strauss. Sam caught them on the fourth lap and went on to sweep the class . Manny Dauber must ha ve felt that he just didn't try hard enough in the first moto, so he rode harder and crashed harder. He was down three times in the first moto , three times in the second moto and looped it as he got the checkered flag. Chuck Strauss finished second , while Norm Elledge took third in the moto and second overall. Results MASTER: 1. Marvin Olson (M ail; 2. Blackie Lewis IM l il; 3. Marshall Jennings (M an. EXPERT: 1. MAY 3 It was Todd Brown night Wednes day at Corona Raceway's half mile/short track as the youngster had one of those times when everyth ing went right. His firs t big break came on the Money short track when he had a drag race off th e line with Pet e Hames and before one lap had gone down, Hames was sidelined with a sick machine. From there on it was all Brown. Gary Jones tried to put some pressure on Brown but was un able to pass. and had a hard ch arging Bobby Garabedian to worry a bout. Garabed ian would ge t right next to J ones t hroug h th e turns and th en J ones' few more yea rs of experience would come into play and he was able to hold Garabedian at ba y. Brown sai led on to his first victory of th e night with Jones second and Garabedian th ird. Number two for Brown was the 250cc Money half mile . Aga in a su per start got him off on top a nd almost in control of the situati on. Terry Singleton was running a very close second wit h Mike Paulson th ird. Singlet on was knocking on the doo r but Brown wasn 't about to open it. Back in the pack , Garabed ian was tryinl( to recoup from his bad start and picked off Paulson on th e th ird lap to move int o the show spot . As th e laps wen t by, Brown started putting da ylight between himself and th e rest of the field and win number two came easily . Singleton held off a fast -closing Garabedian for second. The Open Money half mil e saw four start and two finish. Matt James was struck down in the heat ra ce and Brad Hulings succumbed to biek problems on the second lap of the main . It was a match race between Danny Perkins and Jim Wright and off th e line it looked to be a good on e as Siamese twins couldn't ha ve been closer the n the two of them were running. Perkins had a slight advantage at th e end of one but it wasn' t very big. Two more laps were completed before Perkins stopped ha vin g the feeli ng that he was packing double and he got on with the business of stretchi ng his lead and nailing down a solid first pla ce . It was the first ride in quite a while for both at Corona and with th e show they put on it shouldn't be th e last. Terry Singleton who has oft en been a bridesma id and never a bride, came off second as th e ope ning shot was fired in the 250cc Amateur/Expert half mile, and ca me back strong to slip under front running Ben Meyer to take the lead by the second lap .
