Beavers, Steffan topD-37TT scrambles By Maureen Lee Photo by Gene Lee ELS I NORE. CA . MAY 21 Again , a poor tu rnout of scrambles riders for th e Riders M ,C. AMA D-37 point ru n TT scram bles. Or maybe that's going to be 18 th e no rma l turnout for scrambles now that motocrossing is so popu lar . Garth Beav ers won the 125cc Amateur/Expert , occa sionally peek ing back to see where arch -rivals Steve Karsten and Bud Carroll were. Mechanically Bud was having seizures. A new piston didn't help. it froz e in the second moto but in the third moto , with a stock barrel in place, wh er e was Bud? Out front and he stayed there inspi re of Beavers' hard chase a fter him , J immy Rosa turned in a good performance to get t hi rd overall. The usually big 250cc Novice class shrank to moto size with Greg Sargent winning two and losing the third to Ross Kla tt . Todd Haughton was always up there inspi re of starting on e mot o from the back row . T he Riders M.C . h ad invited Ascot assistant starter Shorty Seaborn out to give the troops a taste of how a professional starter works . Must say th e starts were excellent and not as raggle tail as we have seen them . I beli eve th e rid er s were a little in awe of Shorty and didn't try very much , ex cept for the big bore Experts. For sh ame , gu ys! All day th e referee and th e- starte-r had be-e-n upholding the- rule- the-y e-xp laine-d loud and clear at riders' me-eting : J ump and it's back you go . The first Open Expert he at went to Don "T · Bone" Gri gsb y wit h a pre-tty fair lead over Danny Pe-rkins. Next hea t Ed Steffan , very co lorfu l in blazing orange and white. took off pull ing th e others with him and they all came around to be confro nt ed by Shorty and the red flag . Off th ey went with Steve Loomis and Steffan the two transfers. In the semi Rex Hailey made a beautifu l, smooth pass in between two riders to take- the lea d , foll owed by Mike Montgomery . Steve Miller and Jerry Peters. Come th e main , three riders jumped and got part wa y up the hill before they realized the error of their ways and returned . They were not directed to th e rear line . and instead Don Grigsby found himself fighting to hold the spot he had on th e lin e , as the others muscled back into fro nt -row sta rt ing places. T empers flared and th e referee tossed T -Bone ou t. Understandably unhappy, Grigsby filed a protest ; one we'll sta nd with him on , as a tra in ed obs erver. Losing his tem per a bit didn't help things but it was provoked by th e offi cia ls who d id n't stand be hi nd the rul e- th ey ha d been u phold ing all day . They p icked a heck of a time to let it go by - those big bores are always looking for the quickest way around . We'll let you know what th e Competition Committ ee has to say. Rex H ailey ended up winning the main . Joe Steffan cleaned hous e with three straight in the 250cc Amateur/Expert. while Jay Ba les, La rry Bird and Mark Cain sh uffled the other spots about. There was plenty of sort ing about too in the 500cc/ Open Amateur. J ay Bales got the win with a second , a third a nd a first. while Pat Dobb ins on the lone T riu mph out t here , Joel W indham and Dwayne Las ke rumbled around in th e other spots. And for t he big bo re Novic es? Well , Allen Swett on his Honda did in the assorte-d Yammies, Suzies and Buls, with Willi am Ful ton second and Jim Workis third . Now hear th is, at th e Gr ipsters point run on June II at Elsinor e , they will also be ha vin g a sho rt t rack wh ich is on th e AMA age nd a on a trial basis so come on out and TT a nd short track to you r heart 's delight. But befor e thi s on June II , th ere will be a point run at Perris , so wat ch Cycl e N ews ' Cal enda r section for t he rest of the yea r - a who le bunch of dates have been picked up and we don't want to hear a ny sniveling from you becau se you missed some of 'em . .. you' re go ing to ha ve plenty to rid e th is season for you r points.
