After taking the lead a bout three
q uarters of the way a round t he

finish unchallenged for the win
at Cal ifornia Racing Club's ha re
scr am bles a t Cal ifornia City.
As th e race got un d erway an d the
bikes headed out for th e bomb it was
Kelly (KTM ) out front with Morgan
Ma locco (400 Buena Park Yam )
getting by on a road as did Premier
(Yam a ha's Chuck Miller. Monte Lee
(AI Baker Yam ), J eff Blix (125 Ba ker
SUI), Larry Upp and his son Ken ny
Upp were all ba ttl ing for good lines
and overall position with Mike
Mu lcon ery (400 Mid Vall ey KTM) and
Mark Moulett (CRW KTM) all
running clea r as th e dust pa tt ern grew
in widt h.

Road it was still Ma locco a nd Miller
with a slight advantage over Kelly.
K elly moved past Miller just after the
second check and took th e lead fro m
Malocco j ust past chec k th ree .
m Back in t he pa ck, Doug Beisne r (25 0
Vale rian SUI) and Richard Zaj ic (250
.sUI ) both had reco vered fro m m ultipl e
kick sta rts and were ru nning well in
the top 10 as was Am at eur T on y
Harris (400 Bellflower Ya m ). H a rris,
mak ing his first ride in a yea r a nd a
ha lf, was wor kin g well as he powe red
-his way into the top 10.
After running throug h the Rand
Mou nt ains an d towards th e start
finish , it was the red , whi te, a nd blue
colors of Kelly th at were the first to be
seen. Behi nd him by 40 seconds was
a locco a nd , with abou t th e sa me
spacing, ca me Miller, with a flat tire.
