Coors Tr'ans-AME MX Series - Round seven Shultz takes aatother two at Racing World By Lee Taylor TRABUCO CANYON, CA. MAY 21 The walls of Trabuco Canyon shook with victo ry during the seventh round of American Motocross Enterprises' Coors Trans-AME Series as Darrell Shultz, riding for Rancho Cordova Suzuki, made anot her clean sweep in both 250cc a nd O pen Pro classes, an in stant replay of last k' b k b k . 0 wee s ac -to- ac w ins. ut 14 in front in Series points, Shultz appears to have cinched both championships. In th.e· 125cc Pros, Gary Dent~n resoundu~gly took down another Win for Suz~kl West. . . .. Adding to the day s festivities. Bosch Plugs was out in full force, cheering on their wi.nning riders and givin~ away a C B r~dl? won by Open Pro rider Val Tamietti. . The 125cc Pr~ ra~e was a thriller fro~ start to finish with Gary Denton takl?g down the top ~oney. When Racing World's hydrauhc gate eased down for the start of the ~rst ~oto Dave Taylor (Suz -Ma rconi Racing) took over the lead with Gary Denton on his tail. Bot h set up strong leads over the rest of the field with Cliff Lett riding for Yamaha Motor Corp. in pursuit in third. Behind Lett was Series point leader Chappy Blose (SuzHP Racing Works) running fourth . Local favorites Jo hn O 'Mara (Suz.AJ Baker) and Tim Locey (Suz .DG) were fighting off Ron Turner (Yam.FMF) . As Denton kept the heat on Taylor. a Letr /Blose battle set up that carried both riders through to the end with a steady stream of traffic hounding them from the rear. Blose. moving up fast . fastened himself to the tail of Denton and when the checkered flag came out . Taylor. Denton and Blose crossed the line in a triple photo fin ish with Taylor maintaining control over the situation. Dent on , who had finished the firs t on a flat tire, burst out of t~e starting g~te fo r the s~co~d mota In the lead with Blose moving Into second and T a lor running third. As Blose closed bound on Denton. O'Mara moved into fourth. Pa trick Hubbs (Suz-Tooms Dump Truck) was holding fifth , Lett was in sixth with Locey in seventh and Turner running eighth . Taylor was flying all over the track. making the jumps into ant hills as he took over second. Blose 'was having some unusual problems and found himself in fourth. His knee kept hilling his gas petcock, turning off the gas . Straightening out his problem. Blose regained third as Denton was fighting with his life to hold off Taylor. A similar bailie was going on ' in fifth with Turner challenging Leu deep into every turn. . . Coming down to the wtre t!'e Denton/Taylor bailie. was a chff hanger as l.apped nders .slowed Denton. allowing Tay~or the ume he needed to move al~ngslde. Once more Denton pulled a shg.ht lead .a nd. once more Taylor closed II. Coming In for the ch~ckered flag Denton had a scant one bikelength lead .a nd managed to hold on for the .Wln. !aylor took second.. Blose third with Turner overtaking Let~ for fourth . Denton w~eeled down vlCtOry.row for the class wm , Taylor 'pulled In second place money and third overall went to Blose. The 250cc Pros turned Trabuco Canyon upside down and inside out as a large field of riders took on the Marty Sm ith Track . Darrell Shultz . riding a Maico for Rancho Cordova mot~ Suzuki with a lot of support and love from his father, cleaned up with backto-back wins. At the start of the first mota Tracy Oswell (Suz-Cole Brothers) grabbed · the ho leshot with Gary Denton (SuzSuzuki West) in second. David Williams (Mai-Wheelsmith) moved on into second. then grabbed the lead away fro m Oswell. Shultz was going for it and moving on up took over second as Oswell fell back. troubled by a b roken bolt on his swingarm. Goa t Breker , aboard a Husqvarna for Norstar, was running sixth. He had . broken his foot just before the Coors T rans·AME Series began and this was his first race. With the stitches still in his foot a nd in considerab le pain. Breker was making a strong go at it . He and Bob Stem, riding for Yamaha behind him. followed byJeffVidic. Willliams had a secure lead in first but found Shultz closing in . With Oswell off 10 the side. waving his fellow riders by Shultz was sizzling! Heading into the white flag lap with a two bikes distance between he and Williams. Shultz took command. Locey , running fourth . had his own private battle with Breker right on top of him . With his father and mechanic Payen Johannson cheering t hemselves hoarse . Breker continued to pressure Locey down to the wire with less than a half-bikelength between them . Coming across the finish line Shultz took the mota win with Williams in second. Denton solid in third. and Locey in fourth fighting off Breker, The second time around Denton charged off the line with the lead hounded by Shultz in second. Vidic running third followed by Bobby Kline, Tracy Oswell and Williams. Shultz. gla ncing at his pit man. saw "T hink" written on his board. made his move and took over the lead . With Vidic alongside him. Denton pulled away and set out after Shultz. Kline was at his best and going absolutely wild! Chasing Vidic on the straightaway. nat track style. he zoomed into third. True to his nickna me. " Road run ner Kline" continued his pursuit and sna tched second away from Denton. With Williams now up in fourth. Vidic was in trouble. grabbing at his front fork and fighting to stay in the action but finally having to DNF. Williams continued his charge and eased into third. going after Kline . Oswell was back in form after his first moto problems and took over fourth . setting Denton back in fifth. Wit Stem in sixth. Kenny Zahrt was keeping the heat on . trying for a pass over every jump and into every turn . Coming down to the end of the mota Shultz held onto the lead as Williams continued to battle Kline for a chance at second but Kline held him off with only one bike's distance between them. Coming in for the winning checkered flag . Shultz took down top money for the class. Kline held onto second. Williams took third, and Oswell was solid in fourth. With Sh ultz ta king 'the overa ll win. Williams took second overa ll a nd third overall went to Denton. . Sh ultz pulled th e ho leshot on t he first rnot o for the O pen Pros. on his way to back -to -back victo ries for the class. H e had David Williams (MaiWheelsmith) in second. Rob ert Marino (Yam) in third, Jeff Jennings (Mai- Wheelsmith) running fourth a nd holding off SCali Gillm a n in fifth . Gillm a n . who is currently second to Sh ultz in Series points. was fighting. and fighting hard to hold Goat Breker off in sixth. Mark White (Has-Mission Hills M/C) had his hands full tryi ng to hold back Sherma n Sch neller and J im Turner. ' As Shultz and Williams opened up strong leads, they found J ennings moving into third and starting to challenge t hem. Marino and Gillm an opened up their own duel for fourth with heavy dicing going down throughout the remainder of the moto. Coming in for the end of the mota both Williams and Jennings were closing fast on Shultz with Je nnings rig ht on top of Williams. Cross ing the line Shultz managed to hold them off with Williams protecting the secon d place slot a nd Jen nings ho ld ing third , Gillm an grabbed fou r th by the end. hold ing Marino to fifth . T he second mo to was a Williams / Shultz battle off the line with Gill man in hot pursuit, followed by Jennings arid White. Shultz pushed Williams. edged on by for the lea d and held it throughout the moto. Meanwhile, back in second a threeway dynamic duel was going down with Gillman sliding through an inside turn to take over second. As Shultz opened up a superb lead the battle for second continued with Gillman fighting off heavy artillery from the rear from the likes of Jennings. Williams. White and Schneller. Crossing over at the end of the race Shultz garnered both the mota as well as the overall win . Gillman took down second for the mota. good for a third overall , Williams had moved back up into third by the end for a second overall. Schneller took over fourth , fifth went to White and Turner finished in sixth. J ennings. who appeared 10 have a sure shot at thi rd had a disappointi ng DNF. • Results 125 PROS: 1.
