Larry Hooper (Hus) and Ray Price (Mai) put on a show that had spe ctators hanging over fences and announcer Terrel Hart practically falling out of the tower. Hooper led from start to finish th e first moto , but Pri ce worried him like a dog after a bone , Second rn oto action saw Price I~ave Hooper eating dust after six la ps and began to move away . Hooper again gained ground and as the two c harged the front straight and into the S curves , they came u pon another rider who had nowher e to go . He m ust have thought he was ca ught in a whi rlwind as Hooper went outside , Pr ice inside. Hooper came out first once more and a lthough Pric e stayed with him, Hooper took another win . But a vote was taken a nd m ost of th e riders wanted to rid e a nyway . One thing we must remem ber , Nat iona l class motocross is run in a ny weather, This was a go od cha nce to ga t he r th at a llaround rid ing experien ce , Most rid er s reali zed th is, most rid er s ran . Wh en th e Open Pro class ca me off th e line , th e surface was like gr ea se. Rounding t he firs t righ t hander was Carl Cole (Ya m ), Mike Ph illips (SUl ), John Welc h (Ya m) , Hise a nd Scott Hudson (Suz) a ll practically sid e by side. As they went into the second turn , Hise was ru nning fourth . Less than a lap later, he had gone into the lead and was never headed . The fact is, in the first moto he lapped the second place rid er. The second rn oto , Hise got a much better sta rt and sp u rt ed into th e lad aft er -the second turn . By this tim e , the sun had been ou t m ost of th e morning , the light wind had helped dry th e course and traction was tops. J ohn Welch, from Sa lem , who finished second to Hise in bo th motos , didn't let as m uch space op en up between them this time . Hise had a ha lf-lap lead by mot e 's end. Scott H udson rode a hard 4-3 day and collected third overall. Jerry Cox (Suz) barely missed thrid a nd picked u p fourt h. T he - 250cc Pro class came to t he lin e . There were some heavy names at the gate , like Monte Mitc hell on h is and Maico , Mike McCormick Yamaha , Jeff Howard on his Suzuki, and Skeet Hise , a big threat. Carl Cole , riding a Yam aha from Yama ha W est, a nd Dale Bernards wer e also th er e. The red light flashed on , th en amber , th en go. O ff the lin e with a multitude of tract ion and a rou nd th e first turn , Skeet H ise , th e Ch esh ire grinne r , ha d ta ke n the lead . Jeff Howa rd was right on his tail , a nd it held th a t way until th e fourt h la p when Wilbur Perkins (Ya m) pa ssed Howard to move into seco nd behind Hise , T he next lap , Monte Mitch ell passed Perk ins, only to fa ll down a nd lose it b ack to Perkins. H is!' too k the first moto wit h Jeff Howard second a nd Mitch ell back up to third. O ff the line , into the first two turns ahead the seco nd tim e was Hise with th e scra tc h . Three laps went by unti l Jeff Howard m ad e a move as H ise tempora rily died in th e wat er, He go t it started again a nd began his move . He passed four riders to mo ve into seco nd , on ly to ru n out of time before he cou ld rega in th e lead , Howa rd took first overa ll, H ise second over a ll, and Mit ch ell third, Ta lking to th e riders after th e ra ce fou nd th em delig h ted wit h the improvements ma de to the track durin g th e win ter.
