Skiver skips off with Northwest TT Regional win By Jerry Ashlock BO ISE, !D, APR. 23 T his year's 24th annu al Northwest TT Regional was the cu lmina tion of two nights of sho rt track an d a n afternoon of motocross raci ng . Persistent rains shortened both Frida y night and Sa tu rd a y nig h t's short tracks, but nothing bu t bl ue skies ca me out for Sunday's eve nt. O whyee M .C .'s TT co urse is kidney shaped , with the start goi ng slig htly uphill into a left-h an d tu rn . dow nhill to a righ t tu rn and th en into a banked left swee per . T he oi led, sa ndy track lies between two steep .hill s, where spec ta tors have a maxi mum view of the ent ire track . Jeff H a ney (Ke n ny .Rob erts Pro ducts) got it 'u nd erwa y by winning . the first Novice heat by 100 yards. H is . time was four seconds bett er than the second -fas test hea t of the day. O f the 10 heat s, Cali fornia riders won five , O regon and Utah won two each and Washington too k on e . Two semis were run with Tom Troudt winning over J ohn Bu rnett and Dave Kraft . Bu rnett made a good drive from m id pack , bu t it wasn't eno ugh . In the second semi , Michael Davidso n beat out Scott Ca rn ea u for the second transfer position. The Junior program was changed from three heats to five , allowing th e riders a chance to gather va luable points. Brian Johnston won th e first heat over one of las t year's top Novice riders, Jeff Celorie , by five bike lengths . Dana Hansen had a much harder battle in th e second heat with . Eric Swanson and last year's top Novice, John Wincewicz (Powroll Perfor m ance Pro ducts). W incewicz threw it away after runn ing second a nd ha d to tra nsfe r th rough th e semi. Heat th ree was eq ua lly as close with Peter Simonse n fig hting off Mi ke Ku nsm a n . Dennis Fitze and R od Rob inson . All t hree were using a ll of the track a nd some of th e hay bal es. After a restart of the fourth heat , Jack Darling jumped into th e lead to win over Curt Dorn. The final heat was won by Buddy Rob inson ove r Dat an and Rod Spencer. In th e sem i, T erry Weigand stay ed in th e groove to shut off Wincewicz, including a spectacular last -lap effort . Win cewicz d ove inside on th e right bander , feinted high outside on th e sweepe r and dove inside. Weigand got enough traction to p ull him to th e fini sh line. Ron Spencer edged Br ad Walters for third . Randy Scott [T orcc -Ceo. Herschbach) , last yea r s Regiona l winner. posted fastest tim e in th e trials. He took the lead in t he fir st heat wit h Mike Caves sticking his TT500 Yama ha in second . Ca ves un loaded on the right -hander. leavi ng . second to Frank Word . followed by Chu ck J oyner and R ick H ocki ng . In heat two , Joh n Ha te ley shot into t he lead with Dave Aldana on Hocking 's bike ru n ning second . Ha teley stretched his lea d over Alda na , Lars T urlson and Don Smit h and went 'on to win. H ea t t hr ee had four Nationa l numbers going for it. Ra nd y Skiver, who was limping noticeab ly, got the lead with Billy Oliver , Mic key Fay , J r . and Sonny Bu rres putting on one of the finest in Thi ~ Sp a ce *' * C lilu No .
