Arnet was strong in third as a duel between Rod Rober tson and David Lynch carried on for fourth with Robertson winning out. Jones came through for top money .in the class . O 'Mara took second overall and th ird went to Arner , Jerry Beaman . (Suz-Nort h Hollywood Marine) fought all night in th e & cc Int ermediates for back-toOO back wins. J ~ Blanchard started off th e act ion in th e first rnoto by leading th e pack up the hill and int o th e first tu rn. He had Beaman and Dennis Murry (Yam-Murry's Cycle) right on top of him . Beaman took over the lead by the end by a narrow margin. holding Murry 10 second and Rick Denney to third as Blanchard dropped back in the pack. The second time around . Beaman was right on lOp of the situation with Bob Hale and Blanchard right up behind him in second and third . Heading in for the checkered flag . Beaman was there for the win with Blanchard and Hale finishing second and third respectively . Beaman finished first overall as well with Denney taking second overa ll and Murry third. Andy Jannings (Mal -Cole Bros .) held a winning pair of aces in the sooe« Pro class . Starting off in the first moro, Jannings took charge with Dean Taylor right up behind h im. A battle for third was going on between Mike Rochester and Bill Hagen , both Yamaha -mounted. They continued to duel wheel-to-wheel off the jumps and deep into the turns before Hagen broke away and went after Taylor. By the end Taylor had to sett le for third , holding off a battling Doug Taft and Steve Richard . The second tim e off th e line Jannings once more jumped into the lead . Once more a hot and heavy duel between Taylor a nd H agen took pla ce with Taft coming up for some threeabreast madness off the j um ps and around the track . Taylor managed [ 0 hold off Hagen through most of th e moto but had 10 turn over second by th e checkered flag. J annings ca me on home 10 top m on ey for the night , Hagen took second overa ll a nd third went to Taylor. Jeff Vidic (Mai-Co le Bros.) emerged th e victor for the 2&Occ Pros after a night. long battle against Andy Jannings with a new Honda ride for Murry's Cycle. Results in Results Section . SAM HSMX season gets underway By Tom Corley ORANGE, CA , APR. 1& The 1978 season of Scholastic Association of Motocross High School Motocross finally got underway today after having its first two original dates cancelled because of the rain factor . Jim Manning and his crew were greeted in the early morning with nothing less than picture perfect weather but the gloomy looking rain clouds moved in a few hours later and because of the resulting downpour, only the first moto of action was permitted. Rain checks were not given out but instead they just called it a race. All seven races fired off once and then the thing to do was to pack up and scat out of the pits because the rain ·would surely make it too hard to motor on out of the park. A num ber of Yamaha and Suzuki machines made up the three 100cc class races which included J un ior, Int ermedia te and Expert competition. Ryan Eide has been racing at Saddleback for a few years now and has worked his way up from a Min i ace to a full fledged lOOcc Expert. Riding for Gahr High, he was able to swoop in the first place victory. Russ Montano landed the second spot on a Suzuki for Son ora High School of La Habra. Certa inly one of the more active and fast sch ool teams for this yea r's season will be Gahr High . Not only d id that crew cla im th e 100cc Expert win , but likewise th e 100cc Junior event, courtesy of th e fin e riding by Mike English on a Yam aha . Louie Soto motored from a few paces behind for team Saddleback High . Resul ts in Resul ts Sect ion. Conley, Kline capture AME night MX ' By Lee Taylor . VALENCIA , CA , AP R . 14 Mike Conley won out over a huge field in the first division of 250cc Juniors with a smooth 2-2 ride, at American Motocross Enterprises' Friday night motocross at Indian Dunes. At the start of the first mota David Lagala (Mai -Cyclop's) led the pack up the hill with Peter Whitwell running second a nd Conley holding down third . They had Ted Kamas riding shotgun and keeping the heat on them . Whitwell moved on into the lead and held on despite losing some ground to Conley who was closing fast. By the end of the rnoto , Whitwell led the pack across th e line with Conley holding second and Kamas in third . Bob Kline (Hon ·BiII Robertson Hon .) took home top money in the 2&Occ Pros . With Ken Zahrt leading off in the first moto, Kline glued to the back of Zahrr's jersey throughout the moto but u na ble to slip on by. A heavy duel was going down for t hird between Doug Nico l and Don Dixon. By the end of the rna to Dixon slipped on by to take over third place. The second time out , Kline took control with Nicol right behind him and Kurt Sofka running third . Kline opened up a beautiful lead as Nicol and Dixon battled against Zahrt, protecting their positions with Nicol solid in second and Dixon now in third . When th e winni ng checkered flag came out Kline took home top money for the night , Nicol was there for second overall and third went to Dixon . . In th e 500cc Pro class it was Andy Jannings all the wayl He took the lead both times out and opened it way up. Second overa ll went to Dennis Gilmore and thi rd to Wjll Harper . The 12&cc Pro cla ss belonged to Bobby Jon es (C&H Su z). who cleaned up with ba ck-to-back wins. Taking over th e lead in th e first moto, Jones had Jerry Sh ore com ing up fast in second and J ohn O 'M ara solid in third. From third on back the riders were all bunched up . Shore overshot a berm and went down , turning second over to Jim Holley . Finishing up the . moro , Jones led th e pack across the line with Holley in second holding O 'Mara to th ird. The second tim e off the line, Shore grabbed the holeshot and found heavy traffic in the rear from Jones and Holley. The first three riders were taking the track by storm three abreast .
