Jammer knows but ain't tellin'. Hurricane knows and he '$ Mark Barn ett. tellin'. Warren Reid threw a 3-4 punch. ip MX Series - R ou n ds 3/3 lead, Hurricane blasts'em again S The second mota saw Glover trying to make up for his first round error. He pulled another holeshot - a clean one - and Barnett wouldn't catch him this time as Mark hung back in a safe second place. " I didn't want to go any faster. I d idn't need Brae. I was ' after that overall win just like DeCoster ' docs ," commented the grinning 17yea r-o ld Barn ett as he took control of the points lead in the series, Bria n Mye rsco ugh suffered a broken rear backing p late from a crash on the second lap which left him way down in th e pa ck in 14th place . That cancelled o ut his runnerup performance in th e firs t m ot o and left him fifth overa ll. Second overall went to H onda's W a rren Reid who th rew 3-4 m ot o punch es to fin ish a head of Glove r's 9 I. I 250cc National The fa ctory Hondas showed their potential throughout the day with ) teammates J im Pomeroy and Jim Ellis trading red paint for the ho leshot in both moros . But as surely as the r Honda stars dominated th e sta rt s, it was Yamaha 's Bob " H ur ri ca ne" H annah wh o d ominated th e races at Iiill y Rio Bravo C ycle Park . .,In round o ne , H annah ja m med his way u p to th e front passing fr ont runners J im Gibson on the Bassett Ya m a ha. Husky's Chu ck Sun . a nd the n Pomero y for second pl ace o n lap fo ur , When questione d why it too k him an u n usu a lly long a mount of time (for him) - five laps - to pa ss Ellis for the lead . Hannah replied , " It 's really hard to pass out there . and Ellis knew how to keep the door closed on me ." Once he did get the lead , Hannah began pulling away at an amazing rate that seemed almost crazy as he ri cocheted off trees bordering th e track and impacted berms with explosio ns th a t co uld be felt in downtown Houston. Hannah was pulling aw a y from Ellis at th e rate of two seconds a lap when sud denly - " I looped it Qat out in fifth ge a r o n th e big jump by the finish! The b ike had landed on the rear wh eel straigh t up. I threw m y foot ou t to try and save it , but the bike bounced forward and nipped me over th e front of the bars. I was still holdin g on upside down and looking ba ck at the exhaust pipe when 1 figured I cou ldn't sav e it. I kn ew I was dead!" said a wid e -eyed Bob Hannah . H annah ca rtwheeled down th e track and into a tr acksid e fence suffering a cut and gashed ches t. He regained his senses a fter a few moments and then scra m bled ove r to his bik e . W ithin 10 seconds a fte r unloading in a nose d ive at 70 mph , H annah was back u p and runni ng . While 'he was in pain . h is lead was secure. The win was H annah's as he hea d ed Ellis and Pnm e r~)y across th e lin e .. ahead of a surprisingly quick Pierre Karsmakers on the other factory Yamaha . Suzuki's top series contender Kent Howerton was forced to retire after he stuck his bike in a fence trying to get away from a down and tangled -up Chuck Sun and R ich Eierstedt. Sun tried to get running again , b ut again fell , this time being put out of the race when his rear shock was bent by another rider who ra m med h is Husky from behind. T he co rn er flagmen weren 't doing their job . The factory Hondas domina ted the sta rt of the second mota just as they ha d the first and once again Hannah bl asted up from mid -pack to pass Pomeroy, wh o had th e lead this time , at t he halfway point. The spectators ret ir ed b ack into the shade for a cold beer. The race was already won . " Pomeroy was going good . My bike isn 't any faster than anyone else 's, though pe ople might be saying that now th at I'm winning . It 's the same bike I rode at Daytona and people said it was a lot slower than the H ond as th er e . My bik e might have a litt le m ore torque be cause it flattens out on t he powe r band soo ner. But then I just po p the clutch as usual and the engine explodes like it has 10 more ho rsepower . I'm just wa iti ng for someone to prot est us.
