I The first moto of the 125cc Pros found Magoo the star attraction , sitti ng in th e m iddle of some heavy competition . "Jumpin' " J oe Burke (Suz) grabbed t he holeshot as they hit the first tum with Magoo (Su z) and Randy Kirschbaum (Ya m ) glued to his rear fender. A battle then ensued for first between Magoo and Burke. The seesaw battle came to a brief end at the halfway point as Magoo fell in 'the back section. This left Burke with a seemingly secure hold on first, but Chandler was really hot and passed Burke for the lea d in only two lapsl Magoo finished first with Burke close behind. Toward the end of the moto , Kirschbaum dropped to fourth , letting Shannon N iday (Suz ) into third. Taking the lead around the first tum in round two , Burke was again followed closely by Kirschbaum and . Magoo . On the second lap , Magoo tried to cu t inside Kirschbaum in a tight turn but ended up on the ground , fall ing to fourth . By the fourth lap Magoo was up to third and closing on the leaders. Disappearing into th e back section on the fifth lap , Magoo was third . When th e top three reappeared, he was number one and pulling aw ay from Burke and Kirschbaum. The fin ish went Magoo , Burke and Kirschbaum. In 250cc Pro ac tion , "Magoo came off th e 'line in second , then passed Brian Layton (Mai) in the first tum for the lead. Those two were followed by Bill Moyer (Mai). Most eyes were set on Shannon Niday on a new Kawasaki 250. Niday started in seventh but moved up to fifth on the third lap, then fourth on the fourth lap. That was as far as he got though, and the finish of moro - one read Magoo, Layton, Moyer and Niday. Moto two was a renewed battleground for Magoo and Joe Bu rke (Mai). M..goo started in fifth ' wit h Burke second. In one lap Magoo was ' in third and on the fourth lap, 'Magoo and Burke tightened up to battle for the lead . Down the longest straightaway on the track, MagQO outhorsepowered Burke to win the moto and the overall. What coul d cap off a more perfect da y for a rider th a n to win three cla sses? Ask Magoo . With the 125 and 250cc wins behind him , he sat -on th e line waiting for the start of th e Open Pros. St arting off in fifth , Magoo passe d on e rider on the first lap , then three riders on the second la p to completely desimate the first moto . The second moto looked like a replay of the first , but this time Magoo took the holeshot and ran away from everyone virtually unchallenged. Results in Results Section . CRRe. riders return for post-Daytona romp By Ric Levit DALLAS, TX, MA R. 18 Central Road Racing Club opened its 1978 season' with the most successful race ever held in the Dallas-Ft. W orth Metro- Plex , Ma.ny of the riders had just returned home from Daytona but were so excited after t he Speed Week they just had to continue their winning streaks. Jon Minonno of Big D Triumph came back with a National Number One 750 Production title and Bobby Goodin a National L ightwe ight Champ. Paul Stephenson also came home , empty but eager for a win. Stephenson took home a pair of CRRC firsts, the Open Cafe and the Open GP win. Minonno also was a double -winner , in the 750cc Production class and the 750cc Cafe. Goodin topped the prior records as he became a triple-winner. The 250cc Production , 250cc Cafe and the Formula 4 -200 G P were his. T his reinforced the belief th at CRRC has the fastest riders in the nation . Freddie Spence stayed home after his su per Daytona win . Dennis Kalmus , retired CRRC racer, took the new positi on as Race Director and did an excellent job ,this time out.
