Sunday was the final race of the Winter Series put on by the Sonoma County Sports Cycle Association , and with a few delays keeping things behind and a light turnout with four other events go ing down the same day, it was a long and cool afternoon of great racing. The 250cc class was the first out with two Divisions of Novices . Pete Hazel made the consistent run here with a win in the first rnoto and a second behind Pete Langley 0!1 a Cycle West Su zu ki, in with a 3-1 for second overall and a few po ints over AI Draeger and Den ny Scarpete. Langley didn't make his moves right in the first moto bu t did just th e right thing in the 125cc Novice Division I wit h two firsts and a good possibility of being a Junior before H a ngt own comes up. Jon Cook had no tr oub les winning both ends of th e 250cc Novice Division II on his H usky, ,!it h Rex Powell doi ng j ust as good for second each time on his KT M. Dave Ramirez broke u p the tre nd with a 3-5 to ou t-point J oey Peterson for third . Bill O 'Don nell started out the 250cc J unior class with a win over Mel ' Arnold and Dean Joyner, but couldn't even finis h the second, leavi ng the opening to Ro n Combs. J oyner and his Redwood Cycle Su zuki came in second over Arn old. J erry ' Heiberger and his pair of Maicos had a good da y at the pay window with a win in the first 250cc Expert moto and a second in the other, to win the overall. Tim Worth fell while lead ing the second moto , bu t while Heiberger was trying to avoid both bike and rider, Phil Douglas snuck his Maico by for seco nd overall. Worth got his red-tanked Honda up a r.d back int o action before another rider could get in to third and rode a fast line to stay there over Chris Grewer, back in action after a long season off with knee problems. In the Open money class, Heiberger kept his Maico in the second spot in both motos , while bad starts did nothing for Bob Myers in the first mo to or Jim Turner in the seco nd . Turner worked right on through the pa ck in the first to take the win on a H usky, but did n't get such a good sta rt and fell in the second to wind u p with a 1-4 com bo a nd seco nd overa ll. Myers got a good seco nd moto start and used it to good ad vantage to win that one while Heiberger and Phil Dougla s resumed th e same ba ttle as in the 250, except tha t Heiberger Wa5 doing t he lea d ing and Dou glas the following . Mini classes were com bined for one big free-for-a ll between the 80s and 100s with an X R Honda grabbing-the overall . Litt le George Holland smoked
