Larry Turner and Carl Tignino finished second and th ird after "Hot Toddy" Bess kept them on the mo ve while breaking in his newl y tricked -out Iraljet , , The first moro of the 9-11 83cc Stock Juniors showed David Denny with the holeshot , bu t Walter Armendariz led before the end of the first lap. Michael Dunlap, who soared through the pa ck to put the heat on Armendariz , soon found Eddie Hicks on his ta il. It was anyone's race, as the trio rode the course in unison , but Armendariz kept his wheel in front for the finish . Dunlap had the edge on Hicks for second. The next time , Armendariz felt heat from Frank Darr. Dunlap and Hicks moved in to put the squeeze on Darr, until the last lap when Darr went down , leaving the second spot open for Dunlap. Carey Klatt and Rich Malott had a m elee going the first time out for the '83cc Stock Juniors . Klatt got some breathing room in the corkscrew , bu t 'Ma lo tt closed in on the straights, grabbing the lead for three seconds befo re K latt to ok it back . Glen ommans held a steady third . T he second rno to en ded t he same , with Malott taking second from Commans to finish behind Klatt. Charlie Butler's Ventura Su zu ki came through for the Sto ck Pee Wees . Jim Malott and Justin Souza pulled th rough Pee W ee traffic for second and third. Resu lts in Results. . Section. , Johnson's misfortune is Harden's gain in Gamblers hare scrambles By Linda Loomis LAS VEGAS , NV, FEB . 26 It was Jack Johnson (390 Hus) and Husky teammate Scot Harden dicing it out for the lead in the Gamblers M. C .'s third ann ual h a re sc rambl es . Johnson , wh ose overall wins would have numbered three out of three in the 1978 Southern Nevada season, was forced to surrender his lead to Harden just 15 miles from the finish , allowing Harden a clean shot for first overall. A broken brake arm , the cause of Johnson 's mis fortune , was hardly a hindrance though as he finished right beh in d Harden for a second overall , second Open Expert. Not far behind the duo was Wyoming's Cotton Guio (Hus) , ta king third in the Open Expert class , fourth overall, and giving Husqvarna dominance over the O pe n Expert. Fred Hansen , co-wi nner in Class 21 at the SCORE Mexicali 300 this year , snatched up first place in the 250cc Expert classs on a 250YZ Yamaha . Hansen finished battling a severely bent shift lever but still m anaged an impressive third overal l. Leonard Sikorski followed Hansen with a second in his class ' and sixth ove rall while Tagg Guio broke the Yamaha trend in that class finishing eighth overall, and third in his class on a 250 OR Husky. The race that dazzled many a spectator was between Kevin Welch (C-A) and Ron Ellenburg (Yam) in the 125c c Expert class . From start to finish it was bar-to -bar, the lead changing back and forth. Bu t at the finish line, it was Welch, who to avo id hitting the flagman , laid the winning Can-Am down , forcing club officials to refer to MRAN rules (which state that the finish line is 40 ya rd s in front of the flagman) for the final decision . Rapidly gaining in popularity, the over 40 class (divided into A and B divisions according to rid er ability) was demonstrated by Ken Guio (Hus) taking first in the A di vision over Bu d d y Col e (Ya m) a nd Pat Hai l (KTM) respectively. Dennis Rober ts (Suz) claimed first pla ce in the B division over second and third place contenders Fred Boga rt (H us) and Allan Ellis (Yam) . The course, which consisted of two 40 -mile loops, was competitive in eve ry class with 90 of the III riders entered finishing .
