MA R. 5 The 240 riders who braved the early morning rain to make the trip to Marysville were rewarded by clearing skies, sunshine , a fantastic track, and even a little dust 'was visible on the starting line by the end of the first day of the " H i Point Boot Series. " Winners of the four race series will be sporting new Hi Point boots, compliments of Iii Point Accessories of Sacramento and Yamaha Cycle Cent er of Marysville. MOlO one o~the 125cc Experts saw a newco mer to the Expert ranks , Dewa yne Sweet. in his second Expert ra ce. get the holeshot and run away with the moto until a last lap fall dropped him back to an 11th place 'finish , giving Tim Mulvey th e win . Brad Harrison. another local Expert. slipped by Rod ney Greener. then took advantage of a fall by hard-charging Danny Turner to take over second. Turner. who had been pushing hard on Mulvey's rear fender , got tangled up in Mulve y's rear wheel in a tum and went down. The fall dropped him back to fifth behind Pat Wilson. In the second moto it was a runaway with Turner winning with a sizeable lead over Greener. who had to work his way up to second after following Sweet and Mulvey for half the moto . Sweet hung on for third . and Mulvey was . fou rth . The overall went to Greener. while Mulvey claimed second and Turner third . At the start of the 250cc Expert first moto it was Tad Gumbmann , followed by Arnold Plant. Brian Jodry . and Phil Douglas. Before one lap was over Plant had trouble and had to d rop out giving up second to Jodry and third to Douglas. Ra nd y Losh , riding a Maico ,' made a spectacular run from the back of the pack to finish fourth . In the second moro , Douglas grabbed the lead and held on for the better part of two .laps when the "Tadpole" wiggled by and went on for the win and the overall money. Douglas held onto second until th e last lap when he was forced to retire and gave up second to Jodry. Jodry had gotten by Ra nd y Losh on the second lap. Losh finished third in the moto and third overall. The first moto of the Open Expert class went to Gary Murphy (MOlo-X Fox) . who led all the way. Behind Murphy. Starr Needham , who had been running second started having trouble and dropped back to sixth. Tom "T he Bomb" Odekirk took over second and held on for two laps before letting George Cheetham and Delno Becker slip by. Then Becker got by Cheetham in the last lap to take second. In the second moto, Mark Hilton, riding a borrowed Yamaha took the ea rly lead and held on for two laps before being passed by Becker and eventually by Murphy. Becker went on to take the seco nd moto and the . overall. followed by Murph y and H ilton . s The thriller of the class was Dick Ma nn with his WFO full lock slides aboard his 500cc thumper. In 0 the Veteran/Old Timer class Marm started in the second row and still won handily over the group of 24 oldies : ' Resul ts in Results Section . After a beautiful first moto start and all 25 riders gelling up the tower jump , the lead went to O lym p ic Yamaha's Tom Poage. Jacobson took over the lead on the second lap and from then on it was follow- the-leader with Gary Racca (Yam) and Du ane Ma rke r (FMF) next in line. When the riders met, they proved they had the start dialed in for that second time. Trouble ca me for Marker just after the tunnel jump when he separated from his machine the hard way . Jacobson went on to take the rnoto win with Racca claiming 2-2 for second overall . Bob Klemp made the jump from 125cc Pro to 250cc Pro and . he did it on the new red machine.
